Outline
•Problems
•Parametric Study
•Inputs
•Outputs & Conclusion
Problems

•Create models and compare with experiment

•Create a scaled model using scale’s law
•Experimental setup
– Apply 5 different loads at the tip of the beam
– Vary 3 different span lengths
Parametric Study

•Model 2D or 3D?
•Geometry
•Boundary condition
•Loads
– Effect from Gravity
– Dead load at the tip
•Material
– Mild Steel
Input
ULS&SLS
•Geometry: Draw the ruler in /CAE
•Material: Isotropic, Homogenous, ULS&SLS
E=210 v=0.3
•Steps ULS
– Boundary condition: encaster (fixed
all directions at the clamp)
– Loads
• Gravity (neglect by experimental setup)
• Dead load at the tip: apply load in –y axis
Input (con’t)
• Mesh SLS
– How to select an appropriate size?
– Element type
•Relation to ULS, SLS, Time independent variable
– Geometry: ULS changing the shapes >> effects the
section properties >> effects ULS load design and
calculation | SLS size and thickness maybe effects to
some of the SLS criteria
– Material: ULS up to WSD and USD criteria. | SLS directly
effects the material assumption modeling | Time
independent: non-linear should change to proper plot
values
– Step: find failure load or set support assumptions
• Boundary condition: calculation model
• Load: calculation model and determine maximum
loading capacity
Outputs

•View the output via ABAQUS/Viewer

–displacement and strain at the specify nodes
–Plot Deformation shapes and Stress contour
•Export and manage outputs on other programs
–Not good for graph editing
–Can plot selected parameters along the
selected section
Conclusion

•Do analytical thinking on problems

•Store and manage results on other
software
•Facing the limit of the computer package
problems, what should the users do?
–Check with ABAQUS manual
–Do parallel models, then using superposition
techniques
