INTRODUCTION
In the context of its socio-economic primacy for the Indian economy, which is second only to agriculture, the industry must
be given sufficient attention in academic and policy circles.

This article discusses the impact of COVID-19 on the globalized Indian textiles sector, given the primacy of the same
regarding social and economic realms of the country.

The study employs the method of assessing the impact of crisis from both demand and supply sides, which in turn generates
a combined impact. It is found that the crisis has manifold implications for this vital industry.

Be it from the angle of consumer demand or production networks, the calamity has made its presence felt across different
processes of the sector.

Indian Textile industry is one of the worst hit sectors due to COVID pandemic, announced by WHO on 11 th March 2020.

The virus also overwhelmed the global production capacity of PPE which is the most critical product to protect the frontline
health workers and other responders.

 On March 1, two days before the World Health Organization (WHO) spoke of a global shortage of PPE, India
had no PPE coveralls suitable for Covid-19.
 . In January, there were only 275,000 PPE kits available, owing to timely import.
 Major shortages of PPE were being reported across the country, posing much danger for frontline workers
who tend to COVID-19 patients.
 An import dependent India then charted a journey to become not only self-sufficient but a world leader in
PPE manufacturing.
 While facilitating the activity of trade in the middle of a nationwide lockdown, the emergency control room
coordinated efforts with several state governments and ensured the supply chains of all raw materials
including fabric, zippers, tapes, requisite machinery were maintained 24*7.

• The situation has now recovered and an unknown turn wherein, as of date, India has about15.96 lakh PPE
equipments in the center- state buffer and orders for another 2.22 crore PPE equipment's have formerly been
placed to domestic manufacturers.

• Still, Bengaluru, Karnataka has come a vast mecca for PPE overall products in the country giving a figure of
nearly 50 per cent product, if we see Geographically.

• Until 31st May 2020, total product of PPE Body Coveralls from indigenous sources has crossed 1.1 Crore.
