Introduction
The Covid-19 has devastating effects on RMG workers life.
Revenue generated by RMG industries is a key factor in the growth of Bangladesh’s GDP which
has hampered heavily by the pandemic.
Garment workers are the worst sufferer of this pandemic as most of them lost their job during
Covid, didn’t get payment for their job, observed severe food and treatment issues, etc.
Introduction
Orders worth USD 3.17 billion have been cancelled or suspended, threatening the employment
and financial security of millions of workers.
• Media reports suggest that by June 2020, 70,000 workers had lost their jobs and up to one million
jobs were likely to remain at risk until the end of the year.
• Factories re-opening in late April increased the infection rate while results in loss of many
workers life.
Significance of the Study
• Due to pandemic in our country the RMG workers were the most
vulnerable group, whose income and consumption patterns were
disrupted substantially. This study will find out the severity of their
sufferings and how did they face that situation. The success in
economic growth in the last few decades could not save poor people
to become extreme poor because economic prosperity was not
inclusive in Bangladesh. This study tries to identify some of the
impacts that COVID-19 has imposed on the lives of marginal
population. Then it indicates some of the limitations of the existing
economic policies and suggests some recommendations.

Islam K (2020) Impact of Covid-19 on Garment Sector in • Bangladesh has taken some immediate action to follow the World
Bangladesh Health Organization (WHO) guidelines in order to break the
chain of transmission, with the help of the World Trade
Organization (WTO), International Labor Organization (ILO),
Global Health Communities, and BGMEA. This is because it is
possible for the virus to spread through the workers if they
become infected (both symptomatic and asymptomatic).
• Safety is the top priority, but it is crucial to launch the economy
gradually in order to improve the alarming socio-economic
situation of the population, particularly to prevent the dangers of
poverty and some large-scale starvation, particularly in the north
of Bangladesh, in order to lessen the economic impact of the
pandemic.

interconnected vulnerabilities in economic security, job security,
food security, housing security, and health and wellness.
• Retailers and brands selling into the UK and other markets in the
Global North contributed to and, in some cases, directly caused
these severe disruptions and disastrous effects on employees.
• There was a rise in physical, verbal, and sexual abuse as well as
symbolic violence, mostly as a result of line managers pressuring
women to work more to fulfill irrational production targets.
