EXAMPLE 2: A multi-tray settling chamber having 8 trays, including
the bottom surface, handles 6 of air at 20. The trays are spaced 0.25m
apart and the chamber is to be 1 m wide and 4 m long. What is the
minimum particle size of density 2000 kg/ that can be collected with
100% efficiency ? What will be the efficiency of the settling chamber if
50μm particles are to be removed ? Laminar flow condition within the
chamber and presence of no dust initially on trays may be assumed.
EXAMPLE 3: A packed filter handling 1.0 of standard air is packed
with fibres of size 100 μm in diameter. Dust-laden air passes through
the filter with a velocity of 1.5m/s and the packing density is 0.1. The
average diameter of the particles in the air is 1.0 μm and the individual
fiber efficiency, =0.6.
(a) Determine the dimensions of the packed filter if the overall
efficiency is 99.5 percent. Assume W = H.
(b) What is the filter length if η = 99.99 percent ?
EXAMPLE 4: An electrostatic precipitator for use with standard air
containing dust particles of 1.0μm diameter is in the form of a cylinder
0.3m diameter and 2.0m long. The volumetric flow rate of air is 0.075 .
If the electric field strength is 1,00,000 V/m and if the particle charge is
0.3 X coulomb, compute the collection efficiency.
EXAMPLE 5: A plate type electrostatic precipitator for use in a cement
plant for removing dust particles consists of 10 equal channels. The
spacing between the plates is 0.15m, and the plates are 2m high and
2m long. The unit handles 10,000 of gas. What is the efficiency of
collection ? What should be the length of the plates for achieving 99%
collection efficiency if other condition are the same ?
