Tropical Deciduous
FORESTS:
INTRODUCTION

They are found mainly between 30

degree North and South latitudes and
they receive seasonal rainfall therefore,
they're also known as monsoon forests.
As these forests are a little away from
the Equator, they receive less amount of
heat and precipitation. The average
annual precipitation is 150 cm and
annual temperature averages to 20
degree - 48 degree celsius.
Tropical Deciduous Forests: Distribution
Relief features of a region sometimes
create conditions which cause
evergreen and deciduous forests to
occur in the same region. For
example, the Mangalore region in the
Western Ghats of India receive
Orographic rainfall almost throughout
the year and have tropical evergreen
forests. However, Bengaluru, which
lies in the east of the Western Ghats
receives seasonal monsoon rainfall
and has deciduous forests.
Tropical Deciduous Forests: Characteristics

All trees in the deciduous forests shed their leaves in summer and
regain them when it regains again. Tropical deciduous forests are
easily accessible as they are less dense, therefore, people can
penetrate deep into the forests. These forests are softwood forests
whose timber is used mainly for furniture manufacturing, pulp
making and paper manufacturing. Peepal, Teak, Sal, Bamboo, etc are
major tropical deciduous trees.
Tropical rainforests cover a small area- less than 2 per
cent of the Earth's surface- they are home to about half the
number of living organisms on Earth. They've the greatest
biodiversity on Earth. Because they receive almost 12
hours of sunlight every day. Along with this, there is an
abundance of water as rain. This leads to the growth of a
wide variety of plants. This variety. In turn supports a
large number of animals by providing food and shelter to
them. Hence, there are a number of mammals, birds,
insects, reptiles and amphibians found in this region.
Tropical deciduous The mammals found in this region are the Tapir, Orangutan, Sloth,
Capybara, Squirrel. The birds which are found in this region include
forests: Animals Parrots, Hornbill, Eagle, Hawk, Vulture etc. The different reptiles and
and Birds amphibians found here are Frogs, Caiman, Snake etc.
