TOPIC: POWER THEFT DETECTION

POWER THEFT
DETECTION
What is power theft?
It is use of electrical power without contact with supplier
and without permission
Power theft is the criminal practice of stealing electrical
power .
It is crime and punishable by fines or incarceration.
It belongs to non-technical losses.
Types of Power theft
The various types of electrical power theft include
Direct hooking from line
Bypassing the energy meter
Injecting foreign element in the energy meter
Physical obstruction
ESD attack on electronic meter
Theft occurs when
An illegal consumer steals directly electricity from
distribution line or from another legal customer
A legal customer steals other bypassing meter or
tampering with meter to make it read less or no
consumption
There is collusion between customer and employees to
reduce amount paid tio company
Few other ways of power theft
Use of single phase supply from three phase supply
Disconnected neutrals from both the ends
Used earth/separate signal from return circuit
Isolating neutrals from both ends.
How to prevent this??
The best way of Power Theft Detection is:
GSM Power Theft Detection
GSM is a mobile communication modem; it is stands for global
system for mobile communication (GSM). The idea of GSM was
developed at Bell Laboratories in 1970. It is widely used mobile
communication system in the world. GSM is an open and digital
cellular technology used for transmitting mobile voice and data
services operates at the 850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz and
1900MHz frequency bands. GSM system was developed as a digital
system using time division multiple access (TDMA) technique for
communication purpose. A GSM digitizes and reduces the data,
then sends it down through a channel with two different streams
of client data, each in its own particular time slot. The digital
system has an ability to carry 64 kbps to 120 Mbps of data rates.
Conclusion
Electricity theft is the criminal practice of
stealing electrical power. The practice of
stealing electricity is nearly as old as electricity
distribution.
Upon successful comparison between the
current values from distributor box and
electric meter in the server if we get a
marginal difference between the currents then
the theft is detected.
