Solenoids are a type of relay engineered to remotely
switch a heavier current (typically ranging from 85- 200 amphs) In engineering, a solenoid is a device that converts electrical energy to mechanical energy, using an electromagnet formed from a coil of wire. The device creates a magnetic field from electric current, and uses the magnetic field to create linear motion. Attracted Armature Relay Attracted armature relays are the simplest type of relays that works in both alternating current and direct current. The operation of this type of relay is that an armature is attracted to an electromagnet or through a solenoid-covered plunger. Balanced Beam Relay It consists of a beam carrying two electromagnets at its ends. One electromagnet produces operating torque while the other produces restraining torque. Induction Type Relay Induction Disc Type The induction disc relays work on the principle of electromagnetic induction same as the induction motor. In this relay, aluminium discs are rotating between two electromagnets. Induction Cup Relay induction cup directional or power relay, coils of one pair of poles are connected across voltage source, and coils of another pair of poles are connected with current source of the system. Direction Type Relay Riverse Current Type When voltage at output of the system is greater than input, current flows from output to input through the circuit. This current is known as reverse current. It increases power dissipation in circuit. Riverse PowerPower Type Reverse power relays are used to detect the motoring power into the electrical machine and open the generator main breaker to prevent damage from this abnormal operating condition. Relay Base On Timing Instantaneous Type used close to the source where the fault current level is very high and a small delay in sending trip signal can cause big damage to the protected equipment Definite Time Lag relay that operates after a definite period of time once the current exceeds the pickup value. Hence, this relay has current setting range as well as time setting range. Inverse Time Lag In this type of relays, operating time is inversely changed with current. So, high current will operate overcurrent relay faster than lower ones. Distance Type Relay Impedance Type. This relay is a voltage restrained overcurrent relay. This relay operates when the impedance seen from the fault point is less than the relay setting ReactantanceType Reactance relay is normally preferred for protection against earth faults. Because ground resistance can be so variable, a ground distance relay must be practically unaffected by large variations in fault resistance. Admittance Type The purpose of the Mho relay, which is also called an admittance relay is to protect the long transmission lines with heavy loads. Differential Relay Current Differential A relay which senses and operates the phase difference between the current entering into the electrical system and the current leaving the electrical system Voltage Differential The main function of differential relay was to send trip signal to circuit breaker when there is a certain difference current value between primary side and secondary side of the transformer Other Types Thermal Relay This type of protection simulates the temperature of the transformer's windings. The simulation is based on the measure of the current and on the thermal time constant of the transformer Rectifier Relay rectifier-relays are designed to behave like an ideal diode, allowing current to flow in a uni-directional fashion from Source to Load when a trigger signal is applied via the provided control harness. Permanent Magnet Relay The main advantage of a permanent magnet over an electromagnet is that a permanent magnet does not require a continuous supply of electrical energy to maintain its magnetic field Gas Operated Relay Gas actuated relays operate based upon the amount of gas generated by small and/or large electrical faults Static Relay a type of relay, an electrically operated switch, that has no moving parts. Static relays are contrasted with electromechanical relays, which use moving parts to create a switching action. Under V.C.P Relay Under voltage relay is a relay that has contacts that operate when the voltage drops below a set voltage. These are used for protection against voltage drops, to detect short-circuit faults Over V.C.P Relay Overvoltage relays in substations are used to protect power transformers from damage due to high voltage.
