The Problems of

Overpopulation in Panama
Powerpoint by:
Vanessa Walters
John Wilshire
Population
In 2008, it was placed by the U.N
that 3,309,679 people were living
in Panama, making it the 129th
most populated country out of 129.
With these statistics, the Population
Density is 75,517 people per
kilometer.
Average Income of
Families
• In Panama, most people make 82
cents (in U.S Dollars) per hour.
Thus making roughly 450$ per
month. The jobs vary from more
rural jobs, to urban jobs in the
city. Panama is about 60% urban,
and 40% rural.
Panama’s arable Land
• In the rural settings of Panama,
there is about 7.26% of arable
Land. Panama has a plethora of
bananas, rice, corn, coffee,
sugarcane, vegetables, livestock,
and shrimp.
The Labor Force
• Through research, we found that
18.9% was more industrial work,
and 15% was agricultural work. At
one point in the 70’s, Panama’s
unemployment rate was 8.1% and
it climbed even further to 11.8% in
the early 90’s.
Life Mortality
• The average life expectancy for
males is usually 73 years old, and
for females is 79 years old.
• The birthrate is 20.68 births per
1000, with 4.71 deaths per 1000.
• Infant Mortality is 13.4 deaths per
1000.
The Causes of
Overpoulation
• The first primary cause, would be that more
people are giving birth than dying. Another
second cause, would be that people try to
have more babies, because of the rudimentary
health-care system. With all the emigration,
jobs start to lack, and the people of Panama
loose money.
Causes (continued)
• With the majority of the population
Roman Catholic, people tend to
disdain from using Birth Control, or
Contraceptives. Another final
cause, would be that people want
to have just boys. And when it
doesn’t work out, it leaves the
country overpopulated.
Consequences
• It’s not just the people that are overpopulated,
it would also be the pets. Because of this, it is
not unordinary to see many stray dogs. With
the unemployment rate so high, poverty is all
through the country. Industrialization persists
throughout the country, destroying many
forests, and creating a lack of food. With all of
these problems binded together, Panama is
the most consuming country in Central
America.
Possible Solutions
• Through the research we have found, we
decided that it would be best to completely
revamp the government into a clean, fresh
slate. We would plan to do this by sending
more money over, building better schools; to
allow better education, and to also send
specialized teachers to talk about
contraceptives.
Solutions (continued)
• With the huge pet overpopulation,
it would be best to sterilize the
stray ones, and to find a more-
suited adoption center. We would
also find a way to stop the
deforesting, by either protesting or
government support.
