Requisites of an editorial
• An issue having high degree of sensibility to the public readers. It
must be relatable and essentialized to the context of the people's
lives.
• Two groups with opposite views on such issue.
• A stand/ position in which each group believes in.
• Pieces of evidence each group must present to justify their position.
• Collective stand/ third person’s point of view
THE BIG ‘HOW’
WHERE/HOW DO WE START?
Choose a topic.
SOURCES: screaming news/commissioned news/trending news
Current and timely Substantial for writing
passing on moral judgment
•Obtain background material and information about your topic
Observe read
interview research.
PHASE 1: PRE-WRITING stage.
1. Identify your purpose and audience – inform, interpret, criticize,
argue, suggest reforms, urge readers to action.
Explain or interpret the way the newspaper covered a sensitive or
controversial subject
Criticize constructive actions, decisions or situations to get
readers to see the problem.
Praise to commend people or organizations for a job well done
Persuade to get readers immediately see the solution and not the
problem
. . Organize Information – briefly outline your facts logically before
2
writing the piece.
Choose details
Order details according to importance (outlining)
FOCUS ON A CENTRAL THEME
The single greatest error made by beginning writers is trying to say
too much.
The error comes from the belief that, in order to be convincing, an
argument must be utterly comprehensive, addressing every
possible issue that relates to it.
An effective editorial must be essentialized.
3. WORKING ON AN EFFECTIVE TITLE.
The title of an editorial article is mostly composed of
three to five words (law of the shorter the better applies)
The title is a label head.
Example: Scapegoat for incompetence (ouster matrix)
Honoring family caretakers (mothers’ day)
Alliteration: Naked nights Taking turns Sweet surrender
Allusion: Clash of the Titans (escalating tension between US and China over West PH sea)
Pun: InfiniTEA PRESStitute PEKEnarya
• NOTE: The title must be striking to attract attention
PHASE 2: WRITING STAGE

Demolisyon kontra CALABARZON

noong NSPC 2017. Nakalathala ang resulta sa DepEd Memo No. 90 serye
1ST
ARGUMENT
2017. Maliwanag na pasok ang The Martyrs, The Patriot, Lipenos Cup, The
IV-A.

CONCLUSION
Sabi nga elevate your game upang mas maganda ang maging labanan.
dyaryo.

Buy and sell
The Comelec issued a reminder that buying and selling
PROBLEM/
votes are criminal offenses. This was made after Philippine
SITUATION/ National Police Chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde, in a remark
NEWS ANGLE that the PNP spokesman said was a joke, advised voters to
accept money offered by candidates but to vote wisely.

Section 261 of Batas Pambansa 881, the 1985 Omnibus

Election Code of the Philippines, expressly prohibits the
POINT for
REFUTATION buying and selling of votes. Comelec officials have warned
that the offenses can warrant imprisonment of one to six
years.
Yet how many people have been convicted and sent to prison for the
offenses?
.
REFUTATION

Sadly, everything about the said law all boils down to just as good as a
piece of paper. This is why the problem is so widespread even the PNP chief
has admitted the difficulty of stopping it – the reason for his “joke.” The
POSITION problem has been around even during the time of Manila Archbishop Jaime
Cardinal Sin, who also told Filipinos to take money offered by candidates but
to vote according to their conscience. That was similar to Albayalde’s
message.

Vote-buying and selling are believed to be so rampant across the country

that the illegal acts are credited for the consistently high voter turnout in all
ARGUMENT 1 Philippine elections. Flashes of news on vote buying have been aired on
national televisions three days before mid-term elections. Comelec
spokesperson James Jimenez even admitted that this year has the most cases
of vote buying compared to the previous elections.
The offenses give undue advantage to candidates with large
. war chests, regardless of whether they are legitimately
CONTINUATIO wealthy or merely distributing dirty money. The offenses are
N OF
ARGUMENT 1
up there with the other reasons why some of the most
corrosive afflictions of Philippine society, such as corruption
and injustice, have their roots in elections.

This situation arises from the weakness of the Comelec in

enforcing election rules. The poll body cannot enforce many
ARGUMENT 2
of its most basic rules, such as those governing common
poster areas. With less than two weeks before the midterm
elections, campaign materials are polluting walls, trees and
electrical posts. The Comelec has to be blind not to identify at
least the gross violators.
In the case of vote buying and selling, it’s impossible to
. monitor the movements of every candidate, especially if
ARGUMENT 3 the illegal acts are mutually carried out by buyer and
seller. But it’s possible for the Comelec to go after
violators randomly, and to make sure offenders – both the
vote buyer and seller – are brought to justice.

The Comelec must take this matter seriously by giving

SUMMING UP/ appropriate criminal charges, disqualification, or any
CONCLUSION concrete action against the offenders. Election laws are no
joking matter, after all. (The Philippine Star,May 2019)
