Respiration

Photosynthesis is the most important chemical reaction in the world in

terms of human life. However, did you know that phytoplankton, an
aggregate of one-celled plants that live at the ocean surface, accounts for
the production of more than 50 percent of the oxygen produced
photosynthesis.

A
Aerobic chemical process in which oxygen is used to make energy
Respiration from carbohydrates (sugars)

the process by which the body utilizes the energy released by catabolism to
synthesize complex molecules
Anabolism

the process of ATP synthesis without adequate oxygen delivery to tissues

Anaerobic
Respiration

the sequences of enzyme-catalyzed reactions by which relatively large

Catabolis molecules in living cells are broken down, or degraded

A chemical process in which oxygen is used to make energy from carbohydrates

(sugars).
Cellular
Respiration

he movement of ions across a selectively permeable membrane, down their

Chemiosmos electrochemical gradient.

is

the fluid portion of the cytoplasm exclusive of organelles and membranes.

Cytosol

chemical process by which molecules such as glucose are broken down

anaerobically.
Fermentatio
n

The chemical changes that take place in a cell or an organism.

Metabolism

Small structures in a cell that are found in the cytoplasm (fluid that surrounds the cell
nucleus).
MItochondri
a

A chemical reaction that takes place when a substance comes into contact with
oxygen or another oxidizing substance.
Oxidation
Respiration

Oxidation- a type of chemical reaction that involves a transfer of electrons between two
species.
Reduction
Reactions

the act or process of reducing : the state of being reduced. : something made by
reducing.
Reduction

What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration?

Cellular respiration that proceeds in the absence of oxygen is anaerobic
respiration. Cellular respiration that proceeds in the presence of oxygen is aerobic
respiration.

Photosynthesis vs Respiration
Instructions: Put the correct characteristics under either
photosynthesis or respiration.
