Know Your Customer

• As per proverb prevention is better than cure, banks are required to initiate steps to prevent the money laundering at the first stage itself which
means do not accept funds the sources of which are not satisfactorily explained.
This can be done only if banks know the financial details of the customer. Banks have been always insisting on introduction of the customer.
But mere introduction will not enable the bank to avoid undesirable accounts.

• For this they have to adopt much stricter norms of customer identification. These norms are called Know Your Customer (KYC) guidelines. Under
this banks are required to know the actual identity of the customer and his/her/its financial background and the likely volume of transactions in the
account before accepting as a customer such that transaction can be monitored. KYC procedure is important both for deposit and loan transaction.

Key Elements of KYC Guidelines are

 Customer acceptance policy

 Customer identification procedures

 Monitoring of transaction

 Risk management

While banks should try not to inconvenience the customers in general, they are required to divide the customer into various risk categories and specify
criteria for each group for accepting them as customer.

Know Your Customer

• KYC Documents required at the time of credit card application can be bifurcated into two categories:
• Address Proof of the Applicant
• Identity Proof of the Applicant

Address Proof:
• Address proof of the applicant is a KYC document which has the applicant’s Current/ Permanent residence address. E.g. Proof of possession of Aadhaar
Number (Aadhaar Card with redacted first eight digits of Aadhaar number) , Passport, Driving License, Voter ID card issued by the Election
Commission of India etc. The address provided on the KYC should be of the applicant and must mandatorily match with the current residence address
provided on the application form .

Id Proof:
• Identity proof document helps us to identify the name and DOB on the KYC . These details will be cross checked with the details of the applicant
provided in the application form.
