INTRODUCTION
• Plastic filled concrete pavement (PCCP) is a unique pavement technology developed by
IIT Kharagpur for enhanced structural performance and low maintenance.
• PCCP are cast in situ concrete blocks in which there are interlocking between individual
blocks with plastic between the blocks.
• The introduction of plastic cell filled concrete pavement block technique will enhance
technical properties act as a flexible-rigid pavement, high elastic modulus, reduce initial
cost of construction and maintenance and ecological footprint .

OBJECTIVE
• The objective of plastic filled concrete pavement (PCCP) is to provide enhanced
structural performance and low maintenance for overloaded traffic conditions
• It is used in poor drainage systems, water logging complications of the roads, bullock
carts etc.

MATERIALS USED
• Plastic cell-A polyethylene sheet of 200 mm in thickness, readily available in the market,
was used for preparing the formwork of cells of 150 mm x 150 mm in size.
• Cement- Portland slag cement meeting the requirement of IS 455 (1989) was used for
preparing cement concrete and for stabilising soil and sand.
• Sand- Sand used for cement-concrete and sand-cement mix was obtained from the bed of
river Kansabati near IIT Kharagpur.
• Soil-Textural classification of soil based on the Unified Soil Classification System
(ASTM D 2487 (2006)) is inorganic clay of low to medium plasticity.
• Moorum sub-base- Locally available moorum was used for the preparation of moorum
sub-base.
• Crushed aggregates for the surface layer Crushed aggregates collected from Rampurhat
in the state of West Bengal were used for preparing cement concrete.

METHODOLOGY
Procedual steps for cell filled concrete pavement are given below
o Excavation of soil
o Subgrade Compaction
o Filling of concrete into the plastic cell
o Soil-cement mix placed into the plastic cells.
o Finished surface after compaction

PERFORMANCE OF CELL FILLED PAVEMENT
• A 100 mm-thick cell-filled pavement laid over 100 mm of compacted moorum was built
in April 2004 at Rakhal Garia, a village 10 km from IIT Kharagpur.
• Usually, 10– 15 tractor-trailers carrying agricultural produce operate on that road on a
daily basis.
• The FWD test conducted on this pavement yielded an effective modulus value ranging
from 3500 to 5000 MPa for the cell-concrete layer.
• The rut depth under the wheel path was measured using a digital gauge with reference to a
fixed datum after every 500 passes and the results are given in Table 6.

CONCLUSION
The following major observations are made:
• Rut depths for all pavements after 1500 passes of a loaded truck were less than 2 mm. The
applied loading corresponds to nearly 3 years of typical village road traffic.
• Cell-filled pavements can be used economically whereas aggregates are expensive. Soil-
cement cell layer with thin cement concrete wearing course or sand-cement cell layer with
thin surface dressing wearing course may be very effective.
• Compared to traditional flexible pavements, cellfilled pavements can be expected to
require less frequent maintenance.
• These pavements also have the added advantage of being labour intensive, and hence it
can provide more opportunities of employment in rural areas.
• If recycled plastic can be used for the formwork, the problem of disposing used high-
density polyethylene sheets can be mitigated to a great extent.
