refers to art made and produced by artists
living today.

Today's artists work in and respond to a

global environment that is culturally diverse,
technologically advancing, and multifaceted.

Working in a wide range of mediums,

contemporary artists often reflect and
comment on modern-day society.

INTRODUCTION -The Philippines is a GOLD
mine of ART.

-Allows Filipino artists to portray

the subject and the medium in
innovative and skillful ways,
reflecting Filipino identity.

-The art of the Philippines has

been influenced by almost all
spheres of the globe.

CONTEMPORARY PHILIPPINE ARTS FROM THE REGION

1. Dominant/Mainstream- foreign CHARACTERISTICS
influenced, industry-driven, technology
assisted, oriented for mass-consumption.

2. Alternative- usually social realist

and/or advocacy-oriented.

3. Artist Groups/Collectives- practices

are collaborative and interdisciplinary.

CHARACTERISTICS 4. Traditional/Indigenous- preserves
local traditions

5. Integrative- the artist is free to integrate

any medium and any form or style in
order to express their artistic intention.

6. Process- based- emphasizes on how the

artist starts not with a final product in
mind, but instead begins the development
of a concept and then subsequently
proceeds with realizing the idea.

7. Site- specific- that allows an
artworks’s meaning to have a direct CHARACTERISTICS
relationship to a specific location
where it is seen experience.

8. Collaborative- an art wherein the end

product is created with the involvement
of two or more artists.

9. Interactive- a characteristic of
contemporary art that recognizes how
the audience has the potential to change
or add the meaning of an artwork.
