What is Solar Energy
• Energy consisting of radiant light and heat from the sun.
• Out of all the energy emitted by the sun only a small amount is
absorbed by the earth.
• Directly or indirectly the sun is responsible for all the energy on the
earth.
• This energy can be harvested using 3 main ways:
Solar hot water
Solar thermal electricity
Photovoltaic cells
Why Solar Energy
• World energy conservation predicted estimation about the rate of
utilization of energy resources shows that the coal and petroleum
deposits will deplete within the next few decades.
• Advantage of solar energy is that it is distributed over a wide
geographical area, ensuring that developing countries like India have
access to electricity generation at a stable cost for the long term
future.
• The huge consumption of fossil fuels have harmed the environment in
various forms.
IMPORTANCE OF SOLAR
ENERGY
At present so many alternative fuels have been developed but they are only able to meet a small proportion of
our actual demand.

This electricity then passes through various electrical
equipments which will step up or step down the
voltage generated based on requirement.

Usage of solar energy in other sectors
Agriculture and horticulture seek to optimize the capture of solar energy in order to
optimize the productivity of plants.
Applications of solar energy in agriculture aside from growing crops include pumping
water, drying crops, brooding chicks, and drying chicken manure.
Most recently the technology have been embraced by vinters, who uses it to power grape
press machines.
Greenhouse gases convert solar light to heat, enabling year production of and growth of
speciality crops and other plants not naturally suited to the local environment.
Solar Lighting
Solar cookers use sunlight for cooking, drying and pasteurization. They can be grouped
into three broad categories: box cookers, panel cookers, and reflector cookers
Cons of Solar energy
Disinfection and sterilization without use of chemicals. UV light is also used to destroy bacteria and viruses.
It stimulates the immune system and has shown good results in killing blood borne pathogens.
Sime microorganisms destroyed by UV light are bacillus anthracis, salmonella or food poisoning, shigella
dysentariae or dysentery, bacteriophage or E. coli, hepatitis and influenza.
UV light can be combined with other therapies.
