Soilless Media

By
Matthew Samuels
Objectives

Lesson Objectives
Students will be able to:
• Define the term soilless media with at least 80%
accuracy after our class discussion.
• Without consulting a textbook, distinguish between the
four most common soilless mediums.
Cont’d
• Make a PowerPoint presentation about the various
forms of soilless media that are cost-effective for use
on the school farm. {psychomotor}
• Create a cheap and simple-to-assemble design plan for
one of the soilless media to be used on the school's
farm. {psychomotor}
Cont’d

• Recognize the importance of soilless media in crop

production in at least four (4) ways. {affective}
• At the end of the sessions, students should have a better
understanding of innovative (non-traditional) farming
methods and how they relate to crop production in
general. {affective}
What is soilless media?

In theory, a soilless media is a medium used in an

artificial cultivation method where plants are cultivated
without soil. The medium provides physical support for
plants, regulates water flow, acts as a nutrient storage,
and allows gas exchange to and from the roots.
Class activity

Create a power point presentation about five (5) different

types of soilless media.
Types of soilless media
Advantages of soilless media

• Higher yields
• High produce quality
• The potential of control over emission of nutrients
• Plant protection products
Disadvantages of soilless media
• Higher initial cost
• High operational cost
• Requires extensive knowledge and experience to build a soilless media
system.
• It also need extensive knowledge on plant physiology.
Hydroponics system

Define hydroponics system?

A soilless growing system, whether commercial or
residential, is referred to as "hydroponics." These
systems aid plant growth by supplying water and
nutrients through a media other than soil.
Types of hydroponics system
• Wicking,
• Deep water culture (DWC),
• Nutrient film technique (NFT),
• Ebb and flow,
• Aeroponics
• Drip systems.
Class activity

Design a soilless media system blueprint, students must

consider the sort of vegetables that will be used in the
design, the design's cost, and the topography of the area
they are working with when developing the soilless
media system.
