Recap

In the previous period we have studied about

• Different types rotary compressors and their working

-Roller type compressor
-Vane type compressor
-Screw compressor
-Centrifugal Compressor

M501.37 2
Objectives
On completion of this period you would be
able to know
• Shell & tube condenser
• Working principle of Shell& coil condenser

M501.37 3
Shell and tube condenser

(Fig – 1)

M501.37 4
Shell and tube condenser

• It consists of steel shell fitted with horizontal water

tubes

• The water tubes are connected to the headers at

both ends of the condenser

• Headers can be opened for periodic cleaning of

condenser tubes

M501.37 5
Shell and tube condenser

• The cooling water enters at the bottom

• Water flow through the set of tubes till it reaches

other end of shell

• Water travels in opposite direction through upper

tubes and leaves condenser through outlet

M501.37 6
Shell and tube condenser

Working principle

• Cooling water flows through the tubes.

• Water absorbs heat from hot refrigerant and
temperature rises.

• Refrigerant vapour enters from top of shell.

M501.37 7
Shell and tube condenser
Working principle
• Refrigerant flow down wards coming in contact with
surface of the cold water tubes.

• The refrigerant is cooled by the water and gets

condensed.

• Condensers are available in the range of 2 to 1000

Tons capacity.

M501.37 8
Shell and Coil Condenser

(Fig – 2)
M501.37 9
Shell and coil condenser
• It consists of steel shell
• It is made up of one or more bare tubes or
finned tube coils enclosed in steel shell

• It can be suitable where clean water is

available

M501.37 10
Shell and coil condenser

Working principle
• The cooling water enters the coil at the lower end and
leaves it at the at the upper end

• The refrigerant vapour enters at top of the shell

• It flows down words coming in contact with cold water
tubes

M501.37 11
Shell and coil condenser

Working principle

• The refrigerant is cooled and condensed

• The refrigerant (liquid) collects at the bottom of

the shell
• These are available in the range of 0 to 50 tons
capacity

M501.37 12
Summary

• We have discussed about

• Shell and tube condenser

• Working principle of Shell and tube condenser

• Construction details of shell and tube condenser

M501.37 13
Quiz

• Water is flowing through the tubes and absorbs

heat from
(a) Air
(b) water

(c) refrigerant
(d) None of the above

M501.37 14
Quiz

• In a condenser Refrigerant changes its

phase from
(a) Vapour to liquid
(b) Liquid to Vapour
(c) No change
(d) None of the above

M501.37 15
