GRADE 1 - MATHEMATICS

Week 7, 8, and 9
DIVISION (DIVISION USING SETS, DIVISION USING REPEATED
SUBTRACTION, AND DIVISION AS OPPOSITE OF
MULTIPLICATION)
The act of separating or
grouping a set is
division!
PARTS OF DIVISION
Division sentence is composed of dividend, divisor, and quotient.

or
PARTS OF DIVISION

The dividend tells the total number of objects.

The divisor tells the number of groups.

The quotient tells the number of objects in each group.

It is the answer in division.
DIVISION USING SETS
Let’s group these flowers into two sets!
DIVISION USING SETS
How many flowers are there?

Now let’s divide these 6 flowers into two sets.

6
DIVISION USING SETS
Take one piece of flower and put it aside. We’ll put it
inside the box to avoid confusion.
DIVISION USING SETS
Since we are grouping it into two, take another flower
and put it in another box.
DIVISION USING SETS
Continue taking a piece of flower respectively until all
boxes are filled.
DIVISION USING SETS
Continue taking a piece of flower until all boxes are
filled.
DIVISION USING SETS
How many flowers are in each set?
3
Therefore, 6 ÷ 2 = 3
(six divided by two is three)
DIVISION USING SETS

Other examples:

Divide the set of 10

balloons into two
sets.
DIVISION USING SETS

How many balloons

are in each set?
5
Therefore,
10 ÷ 2 = 5
DIVISION USING SETS
We can also divide into
groups of a number and
we’ll still get the same
answer.

How many sets of 2 are

there in a set of 10?
DIVISION USING SETS

Group the 10
balloons in twos.
DIVISION USING SETS

How many
groups are
made in total?
5
Therefore,
10 ÷ 2 = 5
DIVISION USING REPEATED
SUBTRACTION
Another way of division is by repeated subtraction.

For example, 6 ÷ 2 means “how many times can you

subtract 2 from 6?”

6-2=4
6 can subtract 3 sets of 2 so the
4-2=2
answer to 6 ÷ 2 is 3.
2-2=0
DIVISION USING REPEATED
SUBTRACTION
Other examples:
Subtract as many 5s from 20 until you get 0.
20 - 5 = 15
15 - 5 = 10
10 - 5 = 5
5-5=0
(20 ÷ 5 = 4 since there are 4 fives.)
DIVISION USING REPEATED
SUBTRACTION
Other examples:
Subtract as many 2s from 12 until you get 0.
12 - 2 = 10
10 - 2 = 8
8-2=6
6-2=4
4-2=2
2-2=0
(12 ÷ 2 = 6 since there are 6 twos.)
DIVISION AS OPPOSITE OF
MULTIPLICATION
The inverse operation of division is multiplication.
DIVISION AS OPPOSITE OF
MULTIPLICATION
For example:

10 ÷ 2 = 5

Using the 10 balloons as example before, this means

that if you group the 10 balloons into 2 sets, you’ll
have 5 balloons for each group.
DIVISION AS OPPOSITE OF
MULTIPLICATION
If we reverse the operation to:

5 x 2 = 10

This means that if there are 5 balloons in a set, then

we multiply it into 2 sets, we’ll have a total of 10
balloons in all.
