Lesson 4:

Gay Lussac’s
Law: Pressure-
Temperature
Relationship
Objectives:
1. describe the pressure-temperature
relationship at constant volume.
2. solve problems regarding Gay-Lussac’s
law.
3. Give some applications of Gay-Lussac’s
law in daily lives.
Guide questions:
1. In Boyle’s law, what happens to the volume as the pressure
increases? Decreases?
2. What is the relationship of the volume and pressure at constant
temperature?
3. State Boyle’s law.
4. Give at least 5 examples of Boyle’s Law.
Solve the following using GUESA:
In one chamber, the pressure is 100 mm Hg,
with a volume of 80 mL. If the volume decreases
to 20 mL, what is the new pressure of the
chamber? Assume that the temperature is
constant.
Gay-Lussac’s Law
Joseph Gay-Lussac (1746-1823) studied the
temperature-pressure relationship in a gas at
constant volume.
He deduced that the pressure of the gas is
directly proportional to its temperature.
This means that when the temperature of gases
increases its pressure also increases or vice versa.
Gay-Lussac’s law states that, At constant volume, the
pressure of a fixed mass of gas is directly proportional to
the absolute temperature.

Gay-Lussac’s Law can be expressed mathematically as:

Since there is a direct proportionality between the pressure
and temperature of gases at constant volume, it can be
shown in this equation:

NOTE:
Temperature of the gas is measured in Kelvin.
Sample Problems:

1. The gases in a hair spray can are at a temperature of 27 ⁰C and a

pressure of 30 psi . If the gases in the can reach a pressure of 90 psi,
the can will explode. To what temperature must the gases be raised in
order for the can to explode? Assume constant volume.
2. Maybelline Cousteau’s backup oxygen tank reads 900 mmHg while
on her boat, where the temperature is 27 ⁰C. When she dives down to
the bottom of an unexplored methane lake on a recently-discovered
moon of Neptune, the temperature will drop down to –183 ⁰C. What
will the pressure in her backup tank be at that temperature?
Activity 4: Gay-Lussac’s Law
Solve the following Problems. Show Your solution
1. A certain light bulb containing argon has a pressure of 1.20
atm at 18⁰C. If it will be heated to 85 ⁰C at constant volume,
what will be the resulting pressure?
2. At 20 ⁰C a confined ammonia gas has a pressure of 2.50
atm. At what temperature would its pressure be equal to 760
mmHg?
3. The helium tank ha s a pressure of 2.50 atm. At what
temperature would its pressure be equal to 760 mmHg?
Answer the following Questions.

1. What happens to the pressure if the

temperature increase?
2. What is the relationship of pressure-temperature
at constant volume?
3. Give at least 5 application of Gay-Lussac’s law in
daily lives.
