Read the short information about the author and answer the
questions below in a 1 whole sheet of paper.
In 1890, Chekhov travelled to remote Sakhalin Island on the eastern
edge of Russia to study a real prison colony. He detailed the geography
and moral and social structure of the colony – including the often-brutal
living conditions of prisoners. He allegedly made 10, 000 census cards,
which he used to thoroughly survey the colony. In 1895, he published
his findings as The Island of Sakhalin. In it he added that the compulsion
to escape incarceration is unavoidable: “Unless he is a philosopher who
can live anywhere and under any conditions, he simply cannot prevent
himself from desiring to escape…”
QUESTIONS:
1. How does the lawyer defy Chekhov’s conclusion about the desire for escape?
 2. How does this information about Chekhov’s journey help you understand “The
Bet”
