Types of Volcanoes

A volcano is a type of landform that extrudes molten material

from the Earth's interior. Volcanoes come in different shapes
and sizes depending on the type of material it ejects.

Cinder Cones
(Spatter Cones)
• Made mostly of loose fragments,
which makes them erode easily
• Have straight slopes and are less than
200-m high.

EXAMPLE: MT. CAPULIN, NEW MEXICO

Composite Volcanoes
(Stratovolcanoes)
• Composed of alternating layers of
lava and tephra
• Characterized by gentle lower slopes
and steep upper slopes

EXAMPLE: COTOPAXI, ECUADOR

Shield Volcanoes
• Large volcanoes with gentle slopes
• Produced by low-viscosity lava
(basalt) that can travel long
distances

EXAMPLE: MAUNA LOA, HAWAII
