Identifying features of

trachea, bronchi and

alveoli

AS BIOLOGY
Learning objectives
• To recognize cartilage, ciliated epithelium, goblet cells, squamous
epithelium of alveoli, smooth muscle and capillaries in
microscope slides, photomicrographs and electron micrographs

• To recognize trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli in

microscope slides, photomicrographs and electron micrographs
and make plan diagrams of transverse sections of the walls of
the trachea and bronchus
Identifying features

Stratified: A stratified epithelium is made up of more than one layer of cells.

Pseudostratified: A pseudostratified epithelium is made up of closely packed cells that appear to be arranged in layers
because they're different sizes, but there's actually just one layer of cells
Trachea
TRACHEA What is cartilage made of?
Cartilage is a strong and smooth
substance made up of “chondrocytes,”
or specialized cartilage cells that produce
a matrix of collagen and other proteins.

What are smooth muscles made of?

Smooth muscle is composed of smooth

muscle cells. These cells have fibers of actin and myosin which
run through the cell. They are contractile.
