Methodology
Research Design
This study used a descriptive-
quantitative research design to
investigate the research
objectives and to gain better
perspective on the data gathered.
RESEARCH RESPONDENTS
The researchers selected 100
students from the 178 Grade 12
Humanities and social science
(HUMSS) students that are enrolled
in Tanauan School of Craftsmanship
and Home Industries for the school
year 2022-2023.
RESEARCH LOCALE
This study was conducted in
Tanauan School of Craftsmanship
and Home Industries at Imperio
Street, Barangay Canramos,
Tanauan, Leyte.
INSTRUMENTATION
In this study the researchers used the
Likert scale as an instrument to gather
enough information from the Humanities
and Social Sciences students of Tanauan
School of Craftsmanship and Home
Industries.

SUMMARY
Based on the gathered, analyzed,
and interpreted data, the
researchers have come with the
following findings presented in
accordance with research question
formulated in the statement of the
problem.
51% or majority of the respondents ages
from 18 years old and above. It is followed by
44% aging 17 years old, 4% aging 16 years
old, 1% aging 15 year old. Majority of the
respondents are female students with 62%
followed by male students with 38%. The
respondents are from Grade 12 Humanities
and Social Science. The respondents were
equally distributed to the four sections of
Humanities and Social Science with 25
respondents every section.
Majority of the respondents agreed
that English only policy positively
affects the communication skills of
Grade 12 Humanities and Social
Science students in terms of
expressing themselves using the
language, communicating effectively
with teachers and classmates, it
enhances their vocabulary, and
increases their confidence.
Majority of the respondents are
undecided whether English Only Policy
has a negative effect to the
Communication Skills of Grade 12
Humanities and Social Science student
in terms of expressing their thoughts
and ideas, participating in every class
discussion, facing misunderstandings in
communicating, and find it hard to
communicate with their teachers and
classmates.
Majority of the respondents
agreed that they try to cope with
being unable to speak English by
watching English videos in
youtube, reading English books,
trying to learn new vocabulary
and use it when speaking, and by
following social media accounts
that help them learn in English.
Majority of the respondents agreed that
speaking English improves their
communication skills in terms of
boosting their confidence while talking
in front of many people, communicating
well with everyone using the language,
it also helps them get rid of the
language barrier, and allows them to
express their thoughts and ideas using
the language easily.
Majority of the respondents
recommended that the school should
build an English-speaking club inside
the campus, every student should visit
the library, students should practice
speaking English during their free time,
also the respondents suggested that
every students should create their own
vocabulary list.
CONCLUSION
Therefore, English Only Policy has positive
effects to the communication skills of Grade 12
Humanities and Social Sciences Students of
Tanauan School of Craftsmanship and Home
Industries. Students cope with being unable to
speak English by practicing more in private and
by that, the policy improves their
communication skills. But despite all the
positive effects of English Only Policy, It is still
uncertain if the policy also affects the
communication skills of the students
negatively.
RECOMMENDATIONS
• English-Only Policy must strictly be implemented on
students as a support to the learners of the language
and train them to naturally use English in their
everyday school activities.

• Students should not treat “English-Only Policy” as


merely a policy but also a part of their daily practice
for their own benefits.

• Students should practice more and be more exposed


to speaking English by spending their free time in the
library or joining an English club.
