Introduction

● Plastics are a group of materials, either synthetic or

naturally occurring, that may be shaped when soft
and then hardened to retain the given shape.
● The accumulation of plastic waste in huge quantities
is causing both environment and financial problems.
Introduction

● Clayey soils are soils that illustrate a considerable

variation in volume as they come in contact with
moisture
● Soil stabilization is a technique used to improve the
condition of a ground to have a higher bearing capacity
by modifying the engineering properties of the soil
Study Area

● Amo chhu is
located in
Phuentsholing
Thromde in
Chhukha.

● Why Amo chhu?

Aim

This study aims to test and examine how the

addition of plastic into clay soil improves the
physical properties of soil.
Objectives

● To study the change in properties of a clay soil

due to addition of plastic.
● To obtain the optimum percentage of plastic at
which the soil is most stable
● To validate the practical application of the
method.
Problem Statement

● According to Awuchi (2019), the average plastic waste generation

is estimated at 15.4 billion pieces per day. The most prevalent
waste materials are plastic waste materials.
● Among the different classes of soil, clay soil is a weak soil which
has less shear strength and should be stabilized (Wahidullah and
Sandeep, 2022)
● Bhutan being located in an extremely fragile terrain is highly
susceptible to numerous natural and climate change hazards
Methodology
Expected Outcome

● The preliminary change in properties of soil due to addition of

plastic can be known.
● The plastic percentage at which soil becomes stable can be
known.
● The data analysis and interpretation can help in
recommendation of the practical application of using plastic as
a soil stabilizer.
