Soil stabilization using plastic

1
Introduction

 Plastics are a group of materials, either synthetic or naturally

occurring, that may be shaped when soft and then hardened
to retain the given shape.
 The accumulation of plastic waste in huge quantities is
causing both environment and financial problems.

2
Introduction

 Soil stabilization is a process by which the properties of a soil are

transformed to provide permanent strength gains and enhanced
engineering properties.
 Soil stabilization is a technique used to improve the condition of a
ground
to have a higher bearing capacity.

3
Introduction

 Sandy soils are those that are generally coarse textured and retain
few nutrients and have a low water holding capacity.
 Clay soil is a type of soil that benefits from high nutrients or the
soil that is comprised of very fine mineral particles.

4
Introduction

Study done for clayey soil of Bole area in Addis Abana,

Ethiopia using plastic strip bottles.
Stabilizing expansive clay soil with waste plastic bottle strips is a
reliable alternative as it improves the volume fluctuation problems of the
soil. Incorporating waste plastic bottles in the construction industry also
is a crucial way to solve the issue of insufficient plastic waste disposal.

5
Aim

This study aims to test and examine how the addition of plastic into sandy
clay soil improves the physical properties of soil.

6
Objectives

 To study the change in properties and compaction behavior of sandy

clay soil due to addition of plastic waste.
 To obtain the optimum percentage of plastic at which the soil is
most stable
 To validate the practical application of the method.

7
Problem Statement

 Increment in plastic waste production.

 Bhutan being in an extremely fragile terrain is highly
susceptible to numerous natural and climate change hazards.

10
Expected Outcome

 The preliminary change in properties and compaction behavior of soil

due to addition of plastic can be known.

 The plastic percentage at which soil becomes stable can be known.

 The data analysis and interpretation can help in recommendation of the

practical application of using plastic as a soil stabilizer.
