 Roughly 4000 years ago, a Greek Shepherd

named Magnes from the Northern Greece,
Magnesia is said to discover the first recorded
loadstone - now known as “magnetite”
WHAT IS MAGNET
 Any material capable of
attracting iron and
producing magnetic field
outside itself.
 An object that exerts a
magnetic force

THREE TYPES OF
MAGNETS
 Permanent magnets are those magnets that are
commonly used. They do not lose their magnetic
property once they are magnetised.

 Temporary magnets can be magnetised in

the presence of magnetic field. When the
magnetic field is removed, these
materials lose their magnetic property.
 Electromagnets consist of a
coil of wire wrapped around a
metal coremade from iron.
When this material is exposed
to an electric current, a
magnetic field is generated,
making the material behave
like magnet.

THREE TYPES OF
MAGNETIC MATERIALS
Ferromagnetic Materials
It is strongly attracted to
a magnet. These materials
will retain their
magnetism for some time,
even after the external
magnetising is removed.
ex: iron, nickel, cobalt etc.
PARAMAGNETIC MATERIALS
- materials that tend to get
weakly magnetized in the
direction of the magnetic
field. These materials
experience a weak attraction
to magnets.
ex: aluminum, lithium, sodium, etc.
DIAMAGNETIC
MATERIALS
- are substances that
are usually repelled by
a magnetic field
ex: bismuth, antimuny, lead, etc.
MAGNETIC POLES

The parts of a
magnet where the
magnetic force is
strongest

MAGNETIC FORCE - the force that

pushes magnets apart or pulls them
together
LAW OF MAGNETISM

Like poles (north-

north ; south-
south) will repel
each other.

Unlike poles
(north - south) will
attract each other
MAGNETISM

WHAT IS MAGNETIC FIELD

 The area around the magnet in which there
is a magnetic force
 Every magnet has a magnetic field around
it
 The magnetic field is strongest near the
magnet’s poles. The magnetic field is
weakest farther away from the poles.
