Assertion and its types:

What is Assertion
-are declarative sentences that give one’s belief about
something else as if it is true though it may not be. It is
expressed as an argument. Usually, these assertions contain
languages that expresses evaluation such as useful,
significant, important, insightful, detailed, up-to-date,
comprehensive, practical, impressive, etc.
Four types of Assertions:
1. FACT
-is a statement that can be proven objectively by direct
Experience, testimonies of witnesses, verified observations, or the results of research.

Example:
The sampaguita’s roots are used for medical purposes, such as an anesthetic and a sedative.

2. OPINION
-are based on facts but are difficult to objectively verify because of the uncertainty of
producing satisfactory proofs of soundness.
-Clue words for opinion statements are: think, believe, seem, always, never, most, least,
worse, greatest.

Example:
The popularity of sampaguita flowers is most evident in places of worship.
3. CONVENTION
-is a way in which something is done, like traditions and norms.
-Conventions depend on historical precedent, laws, rules, usage, and
customs.

Example:
The sampaguita belongs to the genus Jasminum of the family Oleaceae.

4. PREPERENCE
-are based on personal choice; therefore, they are subjective and cannot be
objectively proven or logically attacked.

Example:
Sampaguita are the most beautiful and most fragrant of all flowers.

Formulating Counterclaims
What is Formulating Counterclaims?

-Counterclaims are claims made to rebut a previous claim.

They provide a contrasting perspective to the main argument.

Formulating Counterclaims
 What are the major points on which you and the author can disagree?

 What is the strongest argument? What did they say to defend their position?
 What are the merits of their view?

 What are the weaknesses or shortcomings in their argument?

 Are there any hidden assumptions?

 Which lines from the text best support the counterclaim you have formulated?

4 Elements of Argument

1. CLAIM- is a statement that asserts facts based on one’s

understanding about a particular topic or issue.
2. COUNTERCLAIM- is just the opposite of claim. It is a
statement that contradicts one’s claim and is usually proven and
supported by both reasons and evidences.
3. REASONS- is the part of an argument where a statement
offers an explanation behind a party’s claim.
4. EVIDENCE- is the statement that proves the truth of a claim
and generally leads to
Example:

LYRICS: “SINO ANG PIPILIIN KO IKAW BA NA PANGARAP KO O SYA

BANG KUMAKATOK SA PUSO”
“OH, ANONG PAIIRALIN KO ISIP BA O ANG PUSO KO”
The class will be divided into 4 groups. The teacher will give scenario and let the group
