PROBLEMS OF GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING

Have you ever wondered what type of problem might

typically bring people to counselling? Or what type of
problems usually respond well in counselling?

The truth is, almost any problem that stands between you
and the goals, priorities and commitments of your life may
improved with the help and guidance of a skilled and
experienced counsellor.
The Structural Problems
CURRENT TRENDS AND ISSUES IN GUIDANCE
AND COUNSELING
1. Violence Against Women and Children
Violence against children (VAC) and violence against women
(VAW) affect the lives and welfare of millions of people around
the world. Many women and children in the Philippines suffer
multiple types of violence. The multiple negative sequelae of this
violence can be long-lasting throughout the lifespan and across
generations as well as impacting on individuals, relationships,
communities, and broader society.

2. Stress
Stress is an innate reaction embedded from our caveman days.
Humans had to deal with threatening situations, which caused our
brains to release a range of ‘stress chemicals’ such as cortisol and
adrenaline to provoke what is known as the fight-or-flight reaction.
The fight reaction would give us a burst of energy, ready to fight
for our lives, while the flight reaction would encourage us to flee
from danger and protect ourselves. These days, we rarely
encounter threatening situations. However, our brains continue to
react in this way when we are under pressure.

3. Depression
Depressive disorders manifest in various forms, which include
the classic condition called major depressive disorder. Other
forms include dysthymia (or persistent depressive disorder),
disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, and premenstrual
dysphoric disorder, among others.

4. Suicide
Suicide is defined as the intentional taking of one's own life. Prior
to the late nineteenth century, suicide was legally defined as a
criminal act in most Western countries. In the social climate of the
early 2000s, however, suicidal behavior is most commonly
regarded and responded to as a psychiatric emergency.

Latest figures from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)

showed that suicide incidents rose 25.7% in 2020, making it the
27th leading cause of death in 2020 from 31st in 2019.

OTHER EMERGING ISSUES IN GUIDANCE
AND COUNSELING

1. Bullying and Cyberbullying

Bullying in the Philippines is extended in schools and over the
Internet, with a study that states that about 50 percent of Filipino
students are bullied in school. A survey that was recently conducted
showed that one in two Filipino children have witnessed violence or
abuse in their schools.
In 2019, the number of cyberbullying incidents in the Philippines was
highest for those in region 4-a, amounting to approximately 92.4
thousand victims. Cyberbullying or cyber libel also occurred more in
the CARAGA region and the National Capital Region.

2. Gangs
In most cases students would look for people who would
accept them the way they are and who they are. Gangs are
easy to be with, fan and somehow very challenging. People
involved in the gang maybe good but not their behavior.
Therefore, positive behavior intervention support is much
needed. Involve parents in a behavior support team.

AND COUNSELING

3. Dropouts
In the public schools, dropouts are the common problem we
encountered. Identified stressors are the reason why there
was an increase in number for dropout students. Family
conflicts, separated parents, financially unstable and the like
are stressor in the part of the students that brings about a bad
decision to stop from schooling. How can a G.C. find ways
to help?

AND COUNSELING

4. Teen Pregnancy
According to the National Youth Study (NYAS) of 2010 by the National Youth
Commission (NYC), the young are already exploring romantic relationships at an
early age; almost 75% of 15- to 17-year-olds are already looking for romantic
partners. Even their perception on early sexual encounter is evolving: 37% of the
same age group believe early sexual encounter is acceptable to society. These
perceptions shape their sexual attitudes and behavior, leading to higher incidence of
early sexual encounters among the youth and having their sexual debut at a younger
age. This explains why 37% of women already had their first sexual encounter by
age 19, as reported by the 2008 National Demographic Health Survey.

AND COUNSELING

5. Substance Abuse/Drugs
As a scape goat, students indulge themselves in illegal
drugs. The guidance counselor perhaps needs to provide a
seminar and testimonies from the people who had bad
experiences with respect to the abuse of illegal drugs.
The government agencies such as DSWD and center for
rehabilitations for youths are of great help.

AND COUNSELING

6. School Violence
As educators we’ve been experiencing a lot of misbehaviors
from our students with problems. Some of our students are
attention seekers. Bullying, fighting, vandalism, disruption
of class and loitering are just some of the problems in the
campus which sometimes lead to school violence. There
must be a positive behavior intervention support from the
school administrators, teachers and staff.

AND COUNSELING

7. Child Abuse
There are students in our community susceptible to abuse by
others especial those in authority like teachers, parents and
staff. It is inevitable for them to suffer and experience pain.
Emotionally they are fragile and mentally they are weak.
Because of such abuse the school performance is also
unacceptable.
