I. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

Nutrition defined as the act or process of nourishing or being

nourished; specifically, foods that are necessary for human nutrition. Good

food is essential for health and survival when food is properly taken and used

(The World Book Encyclopedia, 1998).

On the other hand, malnutrition happens when a person suffers poor

intake, absorption or improper use of nutrients (The World Book Encyclopedia, 1998).

It refers to deficiencies, overeating or imbalances in the person’s energy or nutrient

intake. Malnutrition covers two conditions; the undernutrition which covers the

severely wasted and the wasted children while the overweight pertains to obese and

diet-related non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and

cancer {Online Q and A, URL:goo.gl/Y2CdV9).

Nowadays, Filipino children are more malnourished than ever. Food and

Nutrition Research Institute said that from 2013 to 2015, malnourished children

increased to an average of 40% from 10% and is expected to increase in 2016.

Malnutrition and hunger are correlated to each other, this is a man-made problem

that can be prevented says Save the Children (National Survey, URL:goo.gl/v6YRwr)

There is a high percentage of undernutrition and short hunger among the

children monitored by the Department of Education (DepEd). Through regular

monitoring, the School-Based Feeding Program is implemented. This program aims

to improve the nutritional status of the severely wasted’ and ‘wasted’ learners from

Kinder to Grade 6 by at least 70% at the end of its 120 feeding days. To improve

children’s health, nutritional values and behavior and boost classroom attendance by

85% are some of aspirations of the program (DepEd Press Release, 2016)

In this point of view, all schools are required to established and maintain their

own Gulayan sa Paaralan Program as a source of the ingredients in their SBFP.

Parents of all the beneficiaries are also encouraged to have vegetable garden at

home.

Therefore, the study conducted is embedded on DepEd’s policy and

guidelines in carrying out malnutrition in schools and implementing the School-Based

Feeding Program.

II. ACTION RESEARCH QUESTIONS

This study focused to look into the factors that affect the nutritional status of the

select pupils in Gulod Elementary School. Specifically, it aims to find out the answer to

the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1. age;

1.2. sex;

1.3 grade level;

1.4 nutritional status;

1.4.1. weight;

1.4.2 height;

1.4.3 BMI?

2. How significant is the intervention applied to enhance the nutritional status

of the respondents?

3.

IV. ACTION RESEARCH METHODS

This chapter presents the research design, participants of the study,

construction and validation of questionnaires, data gathering procedures, and

data analysis.

Research Design

The design used in this research was mixed method in which the

researchers used the qualitative, experimental and observational method.

Previous and present nutritional status records were the basis of the study,

interview, monitoring and actual feeding of the select pupils will be conducted to

validate the result.

a. Participants and/or Other Source of Data and Information

Three (3) pupils and (1) parent/guardian of Gulod Elementary School

were selected for the 9-month intervention program. A total of 4 respondents

are the participants for the successful of the study.

Construction and Validation of the Questionnaire

An interview questionnaire was used and given to the respondents

and their parents to utilized the data needed to signify the validity and

reliability of the study.

b. Data Gathering Method

Previous and present nutritional status records were the basis to

gather information about the nutritional status of the respondent. Researchers

also had the 5-month work plan to gather information needed and sufficient to

the study. An oral interview and written questionnaire was conducted to

complete the data and historical background of the respondents in this study.

In addition to this, home visitation was also carried on to check the

authenticity of the data gathered. It is also the time to find out the factors that

affect the nutritional status of the respondent.

c. Data Analysis Plan

Problem 1. Profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1. age;

1.2. sex;

1.3 grade level;

1.4 nutritional status;

1.4.1. weight;

1.4.2 height;

1.4.3 BMI?

Results of the nutritional status were used to determine the profile of

the select pupils.

Problem 2. Factors that affects the Nutritional Status of the Respondents

No statistics is used in this problem, the researchers used interview and

home visitation to determine the result of the problem.

Problem 3. Interventions Used to Improve the Nutritional Status of the

Respondents

Statistics was not used in this problem instead a plan was programmed to

resolve the factors that affect the nutritional status of the respondents.

Problem 4. Significance of the Intervention Applied Regarding the Factors

Affecting the Nutritional Status of the Respondents

There is no statistics used in this problem instead home visitation program

and a designed plan was formed to address the needs of the respondents.
