Measures of

Central Tendency
Central Tendency
• In statistics, Measures of Central
Tendency is a measurement of data
that indicates where the middle of
the information lies.
3 measures of Central
Tendency
1. MEAN
2. MEDIAN
3. MODE
 Mean
•  Mean is the average. It is the most
widely used in measure of central
tendency. Mean is also called as
arithmetic mean.
MEAN
I will show examples, then, try to find/solve for the mean of the
given data.
1, 5, 9, 10, 15
To get the mean, we use the formula:
x̅ = ∑ 𝒙
𝒏
where: x̅ = 1+5+9+10+15
x̅ = mean 5
∑ = summation of
x = quantities or scores
= 40
N = total number of quantities 5
=8
FIND THE MEAN
• The score of the learner in his four written
works are 15,19,21,25. What will be his
average score?
15+19+21+25
x̅ =
4
= 80
4
= 20

The mean is 20.

MEDIAN
• The median is the middle value in a set of
quantities.
MEDIAN
• For example, 1,2,3,4,5
Median: 3

• 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, what is the median?

Median: 7.5
Steps in getting the median of
the given values
• Arrange in order the numbers/values
in the set. (From least to greatest or
greatest to least).
• If the total number of elements is an
odd number, therefore, the median is
the middle value of the quantities. If n
is an even number, get the 2 numbers
at the middle. Then, get their mean.
Example
• Find the median 2,7,5,9,10,13,3
=2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 13
Median: 7
Example
• Determine the median of the set of scores:
15,17,22,14,30,27
=14,15,17,22,27,30
= 17+22= 39
2
Median=19.5
MODE
•  Mode is the quantity which occurred most
frequently in a set of data. A set of data
that contains only one mode is called
unimodal. Therefore, those sets a while
ago are considered unimodal since they
only contain 1 mode.
MODE
4, 5, 3, 3, 5, 3, 1
(The mode is 3)

28, 25, 32, 28, 17, 28

(The mode is 28)
MODE
• If a set of data having 1 mode is unimodal,
a set of data having 2 modes called
bimodal, and if  if a set of data consists
more than two modes, we call it
multimodal. Having no mode in a set of
data is also possible.
Example
Which set of data has TWO MODES?
a. 9, 11, 16, 6, 7, 17, 18
b. 18, 7, 10, 7, 18
c. 9, 11, 16, 8, 16

Letter C. 9, 11, 16, 8, 16

Mode : 16
Example
• Which set of data has NO MODE?
a. 9, 11, 16, 6, 7, 17, 18
b. 18, 7, 10, 7, 18
c. 13, 12, 12, 11, 12

A. 9, 11, 16, 6, 7, 17, 18.

Example
• Which set of data has MORE THAN ONE MODE?
a. 9, 11, 16, 8, 16
b. 9, 11, 16, 6, 7, 17, 18
c. 18, 7, 10, 7, 18

C. 18, 7, 10, 7, 18,

Mode: 7 and 18
