REPORT TEXT

• Deffinition of report text
“Report is a text which presents information about something, as it is. It is as a result of systematic
observation and analyses.”
• Language feature
– Use of general nouns, eg hunting dogs, rather than particular nouns, eg our dog;
– Use of relating verbs to describe features, eg Molecules are tiny particles;
– Some use of action verbs when describing behaviour, eg Emus cannot fly;
– Use of timeless present tense to indicate usualness, eg Tropical cyclones always begin over the sea;
– Use of technical terms, eg Isobars are lines drawn on a weather map;
– Use of paragraphs with topic sentences to organise bundles of information; repeated naming of the
topic as the beginning focus of the clause.

(General Classification)
Dogs are one of the most popular pet in the world. It is believed that they were the first mammals to be
domesticated ever. They are omnivore. With a unique ability and high intelligence, dogs were trained by
humans to accomplish certain jobs, such as rescue dogs, police dogs, hunting dogs, herding dogs and even
as a messenger. Some people consider dogs as “man’s best friend” for their loyalty.

(Description)
Their scientific name is canis lupus familiaris. They were descendant of wolves. Generally, dogs can live up
to 13 years. There are now hundreds of its species existed in the world with various characteristics after
undergoing a lot of cross-breed process for hundreds of years. Depending on the species, some dogs can
reach the size of 110cm. Each species of dogs have their own unique characteristic such as colors and
length of the fur, unique pattern on their skin, body size, shape of the head and their ear. Most of them
produce similar sound such as “bark”, “woof”, “arf”. Dogs have four legs. Some species have longer legs that
allow them to be a better runner. Dogs are color blind, but they can smell and also hear better than humans

Every people certainly have a mother. It is because people are born from her.  The existence of her among us is
definitely important. That is why I love her so much. I owe great debt to what she has been doing to me until right now.
And here is my mother.
(Description)
My mother’s name is Khodijah. She was born 49 years ago. She is short, but not too short. She is little fat. And she is
old. She has got short white straight hair. She has got brown skin. She is beautiful. Her hand is so soft, the hand that
have taught me to be kind person.
She never stops to support me. She always tells me to not give up so easily.
She always gives me some fine solutions when I have some problems. The importance of her is never denied. That is
why I never reject her willing.
The differences between Descriptive and Report Text

Some text types are quite difficult to differ. Such report and descriptive text have the similarity in the social function and
generic structure. However if they are analyzed carefully, the slight difference between the two text types will reveal.
The purpose of the two texts are to give the live-description of the object/participant. Both the report and descriptive text
try to show rather than tell the reader about the factual condition of the object. Readers by themselves will catch the
impressive point of the object through that showing writing style. What make different, between report and descriptive text,
is the scope of the written object. If we talk about, eg: bicycle, it belongs to report text. It will talk about bicycle in general;
its parts, physical strengh, function for certain people or other general characters of bike. In the other hand, descriptive
text will convey more focus, for example "my bicycle" with its specific characters; colour, lengh, wheel style, etc.
In short, report text describes the way of certain things and frequently refer to phenomenon of nature, animal and scientific
object. Mostly, report is written after getting careful observation. This scientific and technical sense make clearer difference
from descriptive text. The way of descriptive text in showing thing is based on the objective fact of the thing. It describe the
specific thing simply as the thing is.
