What is EDUSAT?
GSAT-3, also known as EDUSAT, was a
communications satellite which was launched on 20
September 2004 by the Indian Space Research Organisation
. EDUSAT is the first Indian satellite built exclusively to
serve the educational sector.

It is mainly intended to meet the demand for an interactive

satellite-based distance education system for the country.
EDUSAT carries five Ku band transponders providing spot
beams, one Ku band transponder providing a national beam
and six extended C band transponders providing national
coverage beams.
What is the purpose of Launching EDUSAT?
EDUSAT will use the virtual classroom concept to offer education to children in
remote villages, quality higher education to students in areas without access to good
technical institutes, adult literacy programmes and training modules for teachers.

“It is a unique mission and we are happy to have achieved it,” Nair says. H P Dixit, vice
chancellor of Indira Gandhi Open University, added: “It will revolutionise education in
our country.”

EDUSAT carries six KU-band transponders and six extended C-band transponders. All
but one of the KU-band transponders will be dedicated to specific regions of India,
while the rest of the transponders will provide blanket coverage for the country.
he satellite will utilise an antenna with a 1.2-metre reflector to direct the KU-band spot
beams towards their intended regions. This will enable information to be broadcast in
relevant local languages – India has 18 official languages and over 400 dialects.
What is the role of EDUSAT?
To ensure the availability of quality content online.
To support to total literacy
To promote virtual classroom and video lectures
To provide best teaming experience
Giving a thrust to distance education
Education to a large number of students at the same
time
To reduce geographical distances for remote students
Advantages and Disadvantages
One of the major advantages of using EDUSAT tools is its potential to
reduce the cost of group meetings. Savings come primarily from
reduced travel costs. Although saving money is a big advantage of
EDUSAT in meetings.
 • People (including outside guest speakers) who wouldn't normally
attend a distant FTF meeting can participate in EDUSAT enabled
meetings.
 •
 Follow-up to earlier meetings can be done with relative ease and little
expense.
 • Socializing is minimal compared to an FTF meeting; therefore,
meetings are shorter and more oriented to the primary purpose of the
meeting.
 • Some routine meetings are more effective since one can audio
conference from any location equipped with a telephone.
Advantages and Disadvantages
 Technical failures with equipment, including connections that
aren't made.
 Unsatisfactory for complex interpersonal communication,
such as negotiation or bargaining.

 Impersonal, less easy to create an atmosphere of group rapport. •

 Lack of participant familiarity with the equipment, the medium
itself, and meeting skills.
 Acoustical problems while using EDUSAT tools in rooms.
 Difficulty in determining participant speaking order; frequently
one person monopolizes the meeting.
How did EDUSAT revolutionize Education ?
 Learning from experiments & use of teaching aids.
Visuals shown in TV helps in longer retention among also lead to
students' better understanding of content.
 Can see organisms that are not commonly seen.
 Can collect information & see historical events.

 Can see environment (rivers, hills, water falls, motion of vehicles,

sounds produced by various animals & birds) and listen to various
sounds.
 Two to three classes can be shown the lesson simultaneously as
some of the programmes have common elements across the grades.
When students view the visuals, experiences as if he/she is part of
it.
How did EDUSAT revolutionize Education?
 Stories and plays will attract students' attention.
 Helps in learning difficult topic with ease.
 Curiosity to learn increases.
 Direct learning results from visualization and learning becomes
joyful.
 Conceptualization is possible.
 Less problems in the programs.
 Students pay move attention for viewing rather than just listening.
 Enhances students' abilities to visualize.
 Programs are capable of increasing attendance learning interest,
vocabulary, questioning tendency, and acting and analyzing abilities.
Conclusion
The launch of EDUSAT has helped in providing quality instruction
through video programs to students studying in the interior
villages. The students have benefited from the video programs
delivered through the Satellite.

The benefit gained is in terms

of gain in knowledge and understanding of the content,
improvement in attendance and holding attention and interest in
viewing programs. The teacher involvement during the broadcast
as facilitator and conduct of Pre and Post broadcast activity is note
worthy.
