 How to name Propan-
2-ol

1. Find the longest chain containing the hydroxyl group (OH). The longest
continuous chain (LCC) of carbon atoms containing the OH group is
taken as the parent compound- an alkane with the same number of
carbon atoms.
2. The number that indicate the position of OH group is prefixed to the
name of the parent hydrocarbon, and the –e ending of the parents alkane
is replaced by the suffix –ol.

 Example applied

• Propan-2-ol can be found in variable amounts among common

household products such as medications, colognes, perfumes,
toiletries and glass cleaning fluids

isopropanol but at low concentration (less than 5%)
