INTRODUCT
ION
• PPM and PPB are units used in atmospheric chemistry
to describe the concentration of gases.

• PPM stands for parts of gas per million parts of air,

and PPB is parts per billion.

• If that's not easy to imagine, try these examples: Part

per million (ppm): 1 second in just under 2 weeks. 1
liter of water in a swimming pool.

• Part per billion (ppb): 1 second in 32 years. 1 ml of

water in a swimming pool (that's about the size of a
sugar cube).
Definitions

1) Parts per million (ppm) is a way of expressing very dilute

concentrations of substances. Just as per cent means out of a
hundred, so parts per million or ppm means out of a million.
Usually describes the concentration of something in water or
soil. One ppm is equivalent to 1 milligram of something per
liter of water (mg/l) or 1 milligram of something per
kilogram soil (mg/kg).

2) Parts per billion (ppb) is the number of units of mass of a

contaminant (polluter ) per 1000 million units of total
mass. Also µg/L or micrograms per liter. More: ppb (or ppbm)
is used to measure the concentration of a contaminant in soils
and sediments.
● Definition: The percent by mass (present by
weight) is the ratio of the mass of a solute to the
mass of the solution, multiplied by 100 percent.

○ No unit since it is a ratio of two similar

quantities
1 gram = 103 milligram = 106
microgram
Expressions
● Mass of solution = gram of solute + gram of
solvent

● Parts Per million (ppm) =

● Parts Per Billion (ppb) =

Units are 1 ppm = 1 mg/L 1 ppb = 1 mg/L
Questions

1) Consider a 155.3 g pond water sample that contains 1.7x10-

4 g of phosphates. In ppm, what is the phosphate
concentration?

Answer =

2) If you have 39.16 grams of Zn₃(PO₄) ₂ dissolved in 56660

grams of swimming pool water, what is concentration in parts
per million (ppm)?

3) If you have 0.401 grams of C₆H₆ dissolved in 51820 grams

of water aquarium, what is concentration in parts per million
(ppb)?
