assignment
Home and Housing - Lizzie and Jameela
Elements
Including space, line, form/shape, texture, and
colour/value - Lizzie
01
Space
Distance between objects and
around furniture and their
proportions with the room.
SPACE

In this room, you can see lots of space around the

furniture and lots of room for light. This makes the
room seem minimalistic and have a echoey affect.
02
Line
Used to create flow and
movement throughout a space.
LINE

In this room, there is line on the walls

to create a texture and a focal point.
The pictures pop out more because of
the wall print and the rest of the
furniture, especially the pillows have
line used in them to keep the element
flowing. The room is also adjacent on
each side.
03
FORM/SHAPE
Areas or masses which define
objects in space. They cannot
exist without space there are
also various ways to show
form and shape.
FORM/SHAPE

In this room there is shape used in the furniture, carpet,

and on the frame on the wall. These create a focal point
in the middle where there is a lot of symmetry and
different forms of shape being used.
04
TEXTURE
An object's physical
appearance or feeling.
TEXTURE

In this picture, there is a wood type of wall

texture which creates a feeling of a rough
affect on the wall. The carpet and couch also
seem to have a soft and velvety look to them
which contrasts between the two.

There are many different

type of textures used in
design and the most
common are wood and silk.
05
COLOUR/VALUE
Value is determined by the amount of
light the colours reflect onto the room and
objects. Colours can give a room a certain
feeling or look to them, depending on
how they are used.
COLOUR/VALUE
In this room, the basic focal point is the couch
because of how much yellow surrounds it. There are
different shades and hues of yellow being used and
the light from the windows shining through creates a
light pastel yellow affect. This room feels very bright
and happy because that is the effect yellow gives off
in general. A certain colour in a room can really
differentiate the other aspects/elements of the room.
Principles
Including proportion, balance, rhythm, unity,
emphasis/focal point, and contrast - Jameela
01 Proportions
The rules of proportion is important in housing design. Correct
proportions make for a balanced room.
In these images Proportions are being used to map out house layouts. This
makes for a balanced and uniform layout.
02 Balance
Balance is the distribution of weight and objects around a
room. Placing objects in a balanced way makes the room feel
well thought out and put together.
Balance

This room demonstrates

balance in room decor. The
room itself is almost
symmetrical but the
designers have placed a big
couch on one side to balance
having a fireplace on the
other.
03
Rhythm
Rhythm is a strong regular/ repeated pattern or sound.
Rhythm

This area here demonstrates Rhythm. There is

repeated seating arrangements and light
fixtures. Along with wall decor that continues
throughout the entire room.
04
Unity
Unity can be seen in house design in rooms with
uniform colour and design schemes.
Unity

This room is an example of a unified room.

There is unity in the colour scheme of the
room. Different shades of the same colour are
being used. There is also Unity in the rooms
furniture, they all match and go with the
calming theme of the room.
05 Emphasis
A special or important item in a room being
highlighted.
Emphasis

In this room the item being emphasized is the

round display piece. The furniture around the item
are smaller and more hidden. Compared to it being
in the center and given a white background. This
makes the item stand out more. The couch in font
is also white and perfectly frames the piece.
06 Contrast
The state of being strikingly different from
something else.
06 Contrast

Contrast is used in interior design to make certain

design pieces pop out more. In this room contrast is
shown in colour. The colour yellow is strikingly
different from the purple painted walls. This makes the
yellow pieces like the chair, lamp, and picture stand
out more. Creating an interesting room design.
5 images that show
elements/principles
working together
Different elements working
together that create harmony in a
room. - Lizzie
IMAGE #1 - Texture and Contrast

In this picture there is texture being used in different

ways and contrast to bring out a focal point and a unique
look.

TEXTURE - There is texture on the walls to create a

stone feeling, a glass texture to the reflecting panel on
the wall and a soft cushion effect on the couch.

CONTRAST - There is contrast being used to bring out

a focal point in the room, which is the couch.

room or to bring out a colour or object. In this case it is
used to bring out a focal point.

used on the walls of used because both sides
the room to create a of the room are used

wood texture. ways and the line
element makes
everything look more
symmetrical.

In this image, line is used on the walls and frames of the room and
that creates balance with it being on both sides of the room and how
they are all adjacent to each other and fit together nicely.
IMAGE #3 - COLOUR AND UNITY
In this room, colour and unity are the present
elements. Colour is used on the sofa, walls,
objects and curtains. Unity is used with the

certain objects pop out and also help bring all
the colours together nicely.

UNITY - Unity is used here with the curtains in

the back to create harmony with the rest of the
room. Without the use of harmony here, the
room wouldn’t feel complete.
IMAGE #4 - SHAPE AND BALANCE

In this room, shape and balance are used clearly. Shape is presented by the
square shape of the windows on each side and the rectangular fireplace in
the center. Balance is shown by the adjacent sides of the windows and
how the fireplace makes the room look full and equal on both sides.
IMAGE #5 - LINE AND RHYTHM

In this image, line and rhythm

are the elements presented.
Line is used by the constant use
of wood across the ceiling and
the walls which then includes
the use of rhythm which is the
repetition of it across the room
which gives it a wood effect and
also a cool eye effect when
looking at it.
