Intelligence
AI
• In computer science, artificial intelligence,
sometimes called machine intelligence, is
intelligence demonstrated by machines, in
contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by
humans. Leading AI textbooks define the field
as the study of "intelligent agents": any device
that perceives its environment and takes actions
that maximize its chance of successfully
achieving its goals. Colloquially, the term
"artificial intelligence" is often used to describe
machines that mimic "cognitive" functions that
humans associate with the human mind, such as
"learning" and "problem solving".
• The beginnings of modern AI can be traced to classical
philosophers' attempts to describe human thinking as a
symbolic system. But the field of AI wasn't formally founded until
1956, at a conference at Dartmouth College, in Hanover, New
Hampshire, where the term “artificial intelligence" was coined.
• But achieving an artificially intelligent being wasn't so simple.
After several reports criticizing progress in AI, government
funding and interest in the field dropped off – a period from
1974–80 that became known as the "AI winter." The field later
revived in the 1980s when the British government started
funding it again in part to compete with efforts by the Japanese.
History • The field experienced another major winter from 1987 to 1993,
coinciding with the collapse of the market for some of the early
general-purpose computers, and reduced government funding.
• But research began to pick up again after that, and in 1997,
IBM's Deep Blue became the first computer to beat a chess
champion when it defeated Russian grandmaster Garry
Kasparov. And in 2011, the computer giant's question-answering
system Watson won the quiz show "Jeopardy!" by beating
reigning champions Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings.
• It’s likely that you’ve interacted
with some form of AI in your day-
to-day activities. If you use Gmail,
for example, you may enjoy the
automatic e-mail filtering feature.
If you own a smartphone, you
probably fill out a calendar with
the help of Siri, Cortana, or Bixby.
If you own a newer vehicle,
perhaps you’ve benefited from a  AI
driver-assist feature while driving.
Basics
• As helpful as these software
products are, they lack the
ability to learn
independently. They cannot
think outside their code.
Machine learning is a branch
of AI that aims to give
machines the ability to learn
a task without pre-existing
code.
• For example, an image-
recognition machine may be
given millions of pictures to
analyze. After going through
endless permutations, the
machine acquires the ability
to recognize patterns,
shapes, faces, and more.

AI robot
• Sophia's intelligence software is designed by
Hanson Robotics. The AI program analyses
conversations and extracts data that allows it to
improve responses in the future. ... He has said that
he hopes that the robot can ultimately interact with
other humans sufficiently to gain social skills.
• This is due to her AI, which has been developed to
allow her to hold eye contact, recognize faces and
understand human speech. Hanson Robotics cloud-
based AI offers deep learning and is also open source
meaning anyone can develop their own Sophia,
should they so wish
• A well-known example of this AI concept is Quick, Draw!,
a Google-hosted game that lets humans draw simple
pictures in under 20 seconds, with the machine-learning
algorithm trying to guess the drawing. More than 15
million people have contributed more than 50 million
drawings to the app.
• Microsoft’s writing assistant for Microsoft 365 users is getting
new AI-powered features like Rewrite Suggestions, which lets you
Examples highlight a sentence and then right-click for multiple AI-generated
revision ideas and is coming to Chrome and Edge browser
extensions and Outlook.com. AI Editor can also now review text
for more gender-related inclusivity and issues that can arise like
brevity, formality, or lack of clarity, and review edit
recommendations in a dashboard. Similarity Checker is also being
introduced today with a plagiarism checker and the ability to
check whether a paper includes necessary citations
