Warm-up questions.

- What is charisma?
 Give examples of charismatic people.
 How important is charisma for a person’s career?
 Which of these adjectives describe a charismatic person:
friendly, assertive, serious, intelligent, funny, sensitive, self-confident,
generous.
READING TIPS:SKIMMING AND
SCANNING
You should be able to skin and scan the passages to do well in reading.
Skimming is reading the passage to get a general idea of the content. This is
recommended to do before you tackle the questions. This does not you try to
understand the passage. It’s just a chance to get a sense of the topic and a layout.
You should skim the full passage in 2-3 minutes – not longer.
At the same time, you should underline any key words you see. Scanning is you
ability to locate information to locate information quickly and has no relation to
comprehension of the passage.
READING TIPS:

 DON’T TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE FULL PASSAGE. Your task is to


locate the answers only. Most questions test your ability to locate specific
information.
 KEY WORDS. Each question will have key words to help you locate the
information in the passage and to spot the right answer. You should learn to
spot key words and use them correctly. Some key words are obvious, for
instance names, dates, numbers, places. Other key words are mare subtle.
 PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. Unless you practice every day you won’t
improve your reading skills.
VOCABULARY: prefixes
ex- before, former (ex- is normally hyphenated) e. g. ex-President
re- again, back e. g. redefine
mis- incorrect e. g. misunderstand
under- not enough e. g. underrated
over- too much e. g. overconfident
out- more than, better than e. g. outperform
anti- against e. g. antisocial
bi- two, double e. g. bilingual
mono- one, single e. g. monorail
semi- half, partly e. g. semicircle

redefine- describe something again, and in a better way
misunderstand- not understand correctly
misbehave- behave badly
underrated- better than people think or say
underused- not used enough
overshadowed- less important and successful than another person
overconfident- too confident
outrun- run faster than before
outperform- perform better than before
discomfort- not comfortable
dislike- not like something
redo- do something again
bilingual- able to speak two languages
antisocial- opposite to the accepted ideas of society
monorail- one rail for a train to run along

Making a suggestion:
I suggest we/you + infinitive. e. g. I suggest we meet outside the stadium
tomorrow.
Why don’t we + infinitive? e. g Why don’t we go to the cinema tonight?
How about + -ing? e. g. How about meeting at 7 tonight?
