2 - FUNCTIONAL IN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

ALVIN LEO T. SUASIN

HALOALKANE OR ALKYL HALIDE

The haloalkanes, also known as alkyl halides, are a group of chemical

compounds comprised of an alkane with one or more hydrogens
replaced by a halogen atom (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, or iodine).
USES OF HALOALKANE

Chloroethane is used to convert cellulose to ethylcellulose, a

thickening agent and binder in paints, cosmetics, and similar products.
Like other chlorinated hydrocarbons, chloroethane has been used as a
refrigerant, an aerosol spray propellant, an anesthetic, and a blowing
agent for foam packaging.
CARBOXYLIC ACID

A carboxylic acid is an organic acid that contains a carboxyl group

attached to an R-group. The general formula of a carboxylic acid is
R–COOH.
CARBOXYLIC ACID

Formic acid, systematically named methanoic acid, is the simplest

carboxylic acid, and has the chemical formula HCOOH. It is an important
intermediate in chemical synthesis and occurs naturally, most notably in some
ants.

ESTER
An ester is an organic compound where the hydrogen in the compound's
carboxyl group is replaced with a hydrocarbon group.

ESTER - USES OF ETHYL PROPIONATE

Ethyl Propionate is a colorless liquid with a pineapple-like odor. It is used as a

solvent, flavoring agent and fragrance.
AMINE

In organic chemistry, amines are compounds and functional groups that contain
a basic nitrogen atom with a lone pair.
AMINE
AMINE – USES OF METHYLAMINE
Used for making pharmaceuticals, insecticides, paint removers,
surfactants, rubber chemicals. Methylamine is the simplest of the methylamines,
consisting of ammonia bearing a single methyl substituent. It has a role as
a mouse metabolite.
