Kitchen biology practical work
Preparation needed before week 35
Biology kitchen experiments

• Choose the practical to complete, ready to write up in week 35.

• Organise the equipment and how to get it

• Create a method and decide what to investigate.

Introduction

This half term you are going to be

carrying out a biology practical
investigation at home (a kitchen
experiment).

You will need to do some planning

• Choose the practical
• Organise the equipment you will need
• Plan a clear method, deciding what to
investigate
• Ensure you complete the practical
before week 35 (ready to write it up
in week 35)
Choosing a practical • You are going to use the following webpage
to help you choose an experiment to carry
out before week 35.

BIOLOGY practicals you can choose from:

• Gummy bear osmosis
• Taking the pulse
• Yeast and a balloon
• Leaf pigments chromatography
• Naked egg
• Fish dissection
• Colour changing flower
• Strawberry DNA
• Homemade yogurt
• Lung volume test
• Human reflexes
• Water bowls
• Rubber chicken bone

(continued next page)

DO NOT CHOOSE:
Choosing a practical • Aristotle's illusion
• dental impressions
• any non biology practicals for this work.

(You can always do others you like the look of

another time, if your parents are happy for
you to try them).

What to do
now:

• Read everything related to the

practical you choose carefully,
watch the video to help and
also ensure you read the
section called experiment as
this will help you plan what you
are going to investigate.
Organising
equipment
• Read the equipment list
carefully.
• Note down what is needed.
• Have you got enough for
each one you are going to do
including any repeats?
• Ask your parents to help you
source what is needed,
remember you will need this
soon so you have time to
carry out the practical
BEFORE week 35.
Planning the practical (1)

Choose a factor to investigate

Here are some examples:

• sugar concentration with gummy bears
• type of milk with homemade yogurt
• height of person for lung volume
• type of exercise for the pulse rate

(The fish dissection is a little different as this is more about making observations and
drawing clear diagrams and linking it to the organs you have studied)
Planning the practical (2)

Method:
• create a step by step method,
• make a note of your independent variable and dependent variable,
• what variables are you controlling
• don’t forget repeats.

Health and safety

• Think about any precautions you need to take.

There is a form to complete in the learning platform.

What next?

Complete the practical work. (BEFORE WEEK 35)

Make records of your observations (video or photo the practical please)

Decide how to present your results e.g. table of results and a graph.

Link your findings back to the biology (if you can, link it into areas we have studied using
scientific explanations).

Have fun carrying out the practical.

Outline of the timescale

Week 31/32- choose the investi gati on to complete from

htt ps://www.experimentarchive.com/biology/ using the guidance in the ppt. Ensure the form is
handed in by the due date (will appear on your calendar), and source equipment required.

Week 33/34 – carry out the practi cal work, record results, take videos and photos, plan what you
will include in the write up (this will be on book creator – you will get some guidance in the learn of
week 35)

Week 35 – write up practi cal on book creator and share work completed.
Apply
Complete the form on the
learning platform for the
practical and ensure a
parent/guardian signs.
