Form 2: Chapter 3

Input Devices
Input Devices

• These are devices that are needed to get data into

the computer for processing

• For a particular application one form of device is

more desirable compared to others.

Chapter 1 06/27/2023 2
Input Devices

• We will discuss various types of Input devices that

are used for different types of applications.

• These devices are also known as peripheral

devices because they surround the CPU and allow
us to communicate with the computer.

Light Pen

• A light pen is a light-sensitive computer input pointing

device shaped like a wand.
• It is connected to a visual display unit or CRT monitor
and allows the user to modify data and text or make
menu selections on the screen. (used in banks to input
a customer’s signature directly into the computer)

Chapter 1 06/27/2023 9
Chapter 1 06/27/2023 10
What is a Trackball?

• A trackball is a pointing device consisting of a ball

held by a socket containing sensors to detect a
rotation of the ball about two axes—like an upside-
down mouse with an exposed protruding ball. The
user rolls the ball with the thumb, fingers, or the
palm of the hand to move a pointer.

Chapter 1 06/27/2023 12
What is a Pointing Stick?

• A pointing stick is an isometric joystick used as a

pointing device, as with a touchpad or trackball,
typically mounted in a computer keyboard.
• Movements of the pointing stick are echoed on the
screen by movements of the pointer (or cursor)
and other visual changes.

What is a Touch Pad?

A touch pad is a device for pointing (controlling input positioning)

on a computer display screen. It is an alternative to the mouse.

A touch pad works by sensing the user's finger movement and

downward pressure.

Chapter 3 06/27/2023 16
Joystick-What is this used for?

• A joystick is an input device commonly used to

control video games.
• Joysticks consist of a base and a stick that can be
moved in any direction

Digitising Tablet

• A graphics tablet (also known as a digitizer,

drawing tablet, digital drawing tablet, pen
tablet, or digital art board) is a computer input
device that enables a user to hand-draw images,
animations and graphics, with a special pen-
like stylus, similar to the way a person draws
images with a pencil and paper.
• Used by engineers to design drawings, etc

Barcode Readers

• A barcode reader (or barcode scanner) is an

electronic device that can read and output printed
barcodes to a computer.
• Like a flatbed scanner, it consists of a light source,
a lens and a light sensor translating optical
impulses into electrical ones.

Chapter 1 06/27/2023 36
Optical character recognition

• is the mechanical or electronic conversion of images of typed,

handwritten or printed text into machine-encoded text, whether from a
scanned document, a photo of a document, a scene-photo (for example
the text on signs and billboards in a landscape photo) or from subtitle
text superimposed on an image (for example from a television
broadcast).
• It is widely used as a form of data entry from printed paper data
records, whether passport documents, invoices, bank statements,
computerised receipts
• It is a common method of digitising printed texts so that they can be
electronically edited, searched, stored

Chapter 1 06/27/2023 38
Smart Card

• Smart cards contain a microprocessor embedded

in the card along with memory.

• Smart cards differ from magnetic stripe cards in

two ways: the amount of information that can be
stored is much greater, and some smart cards can
be reprogrammed to add, delete or rearrange
data.
Chapter 1 06/27/2023 39
Chapter 1 06/27/2023 40
Magnetic Stripe card
• A magnetic stripe card is a type of card capable
of storing data by modifying the magnetism of
tiny iron-based magnetic particles on a band of
magnetic material on the card.

• The magnetic stripe, sometimes called swipe

card or magstripe, is read by swiping past a
magnetic reading head
Chapter 1 06/27/2023 41
Chapter 1 06/27/2023 42
Uses of a Magnetic strip Code

• To gain access to hotel rooms

• Access restricted rooms- like bank vaults, computer
labs
• Enter into ATM area to withdraw cash
• Pay for goods and services at stores and gas stations

Chapter 1 06/27/2023 43
Digital Camera – what is Flash
Memory?
• Imagine if your memory worked only while you were awake. Every morning
when you got up, your mind would be completely blank! You'd have to relearn
everything you ever knew before you could do anything. It sounds like a
nightmare, but it's exactly the problem computers have.
• Ordinary computer chips "forget" everything (lose their entire contents) when
the power is switched off.
• Large personal computers get around this by having powerful magnetic
memories called hard drives, which can remember things whether the power is
on or off. But smaller, more portable devices, such as digital cameras and
MP3 players, need smaller and more portable memories. They use special
chips called flash memories to store information permanently

Chapter 1 06/27/2023 44
In gadgets like digital cameras and small MP3 players, flash memory is used
instead of a hard drive. It has certain things in common with both RAM and
ROM.

Like ROM, it remembers information when the power is off; like RAM, it
can Chapter
be erased
1 and rewritten over and over again. 06/27/2023 45
Pixels and Resolution

• The image that is displayed on the screen is

composed of thousands (or millions) of small
dots; these are called pixels; the word is a
contraction of the phrase "picture element".
• A pixel represents the smallest piece of the
screen that can be controlled individually. Each
one can be set to a different color and intensity
(brightness).
Chapter 1 06/27/2023 46
The number of pixels that can be displayed on the screen is referred
to as the resolution of the image; this is normally displayed as a pair
of numbers, such as 640x480. The first is the number of pixels that
can be displayed horizontally on the screen, and the second how
many can be displayed vertically. The higher the resolution, the
more pixels that can be displayed and therefore the more that
can be shown on the monitor at once
