Coursework 1
Circulatory System and Cardiovascular Health
1. Give three functions of the Circulatory System
● It helps fight diseases

● It helps maintain correct body temperature

● It circulates the blood to all parts of the body by transporting water, oxygen and food to cells
and removing waste products from the cells.

2. What does the Circulatory system do ?

The circulatory system is the transport system where blood is carried to all parts of the body.

3. What are the main parts of the Circulatory System

● The heart
● The blood
● The blood vessels
Pick (1) from above and explain

The heart is a hollow muscular organ which serves as a pump to push blood
around the body.It is located at the center of the chest between the two lungs and
is protected by the ribs with the lower portion extending to the left of the
chest. The heart has four chambers:the right atrium, the left ventricle, the right
ventricle and the left atrium. The heart beats about 72 times per minute at rest.

Systolic Pressure
4. Fill in the blank - Blood Pressure is expressed as a . Blood pressure can
Diastolic Pressure
depend on strength and rate of the heart’s contraction , the elasticity of the blood vessels
and the amount of blood in the system .

5. What are the four Main blood groups ?

The four main blood groups are:
 O
 A
 B
 AB

6.Name the three stages of the Cardiac Cycle and explain each .

The three stages of the Cardiac Cycle are:

1. Atrial Systole
2. Ventricular Systole
3. Complete Cardiac Diastole

Atrial Systole-this involves the contraction of the atria where the blood goes to the ventricles.

Ventricular systole-this involves the contraction of the ventricles which pumps the blood to the body

Complete Cardiac Diastole-this involves the relaxation of the atria and the ventricle allowing the
blood to flow to the heart.

7. What is Pulse? Where is the radial artery located ,where is the carotid artery located ?

The Pulse exerts pressure of the blood into the aorta. The radial artery is located at the wrist and the
carotid artery is located in the neck.

8.Name( 2) Cardiovascular Diseases and explain them .

Two cardiovascular disease are stroke and heart attack

Heart attack is where the blood stops flowing to the heart.

Stroke is where not enough blood flows to the brain.

9. Four effects physical activity has on the Circulatory System.

1. The recovery heart rate increases

2. More blood pumps in the heart
3. The resting heart rate decreases
4. The number of capillaries in the body increases
10. What is blood made up of ?
● Plasma
● Cells
● Platelets

11.
Factors to prevent Cardiovascular Disease Factors that cause Cardiovascular Disease

Reduce the use of cigarettes Excessive smoking

Increase in Exercise Lack of exercise

Reduce the consumption of alcohol Excessive consumption of alcohol

12.
Name the parts of the heart
1.Vena Cava
2.Right atrium
3.Valve
4.Right ventricle
5.Left ventricle
6.Left atrium
7.Pulmonary Artery
8.aorta
9.Pulmonary Vein

13.What are the 4 chambers of the heart?

THe four chambers of the heart are 1)right ventricle,2)right atrium,3)left ventricle,4)left atrium.

14. The largest artery is aorta

15. The smallest arteries are arterioles
16. The sequence of blood flow is the blood flows to the arteries, the capillaries and the veins.
