 Introduction
This PowerPoint presentation is on the Lakshadweep islands.
Lakshadweep is a tropical archipelago of 36 atolls and coral
reefs in the Laccadive Sea, off the coast of Kerala, India. Not
all of the islands are inhabited, and only a few are open to
visitors (permits required). Kavaratti, one of the more
developed islands, is home to dozens of mosques, including the
ornately decorated Ujra Mosque, as well as Kavaratti
Aquarium, showcasing regional fish, shark and coral species

Introduction to the Lakshadweep islands….
 Location
Lakshadweep is a union territory of India. It is an archipelago of 36 islands
in the Arabian sea, located 200 to 440 km (120 to 270 mi) off the Malabar
Coast. All Islands are 220 to 440 km away from the coastal city of Kochi
in Kerala, in the emerald Arabian Sea. The natural landscapes, the sandy
beaches, abundance of flora and fauna and the absence of a rushed lifestyle
enhance the mystique of Lakshadweep. The islands are well connected by
regular flights from Kochi.
 Language
The main language spoken in Lakshadweep is officially considered a dialect
of Malayalam but sounds more like Tamil. Both Tamil and Malayalam are
Dravidian languages spoken in the southern parts of mainland India.  As per
the 1681 census, eleven languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the
Constitution are spoken as mother tongue in Lakshadweep.
 Costume
The mundu (Malayalam: muṇṭŭ; pronounced [muɳɖɯ̽]) is a garment worn
around the waist in the Indian states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, the
Lakshadweep archipelago, and the Indian Ocean island nation of Maldives.
It is closely related to sarongs like dhotis and lungis. The traditional dress
of the women is the Kachi which is a garb similar to the lungi and is
typically black or white. They also wear long headdresses, called Thattam.
Jewelry is a must for Laccadivian women.

लक्षद्वीप में सुखद उष्णकटिबंधीय जलवायु है, जिसमें गर्मियों का
तापमान 22 डिग्री सेल्सियस से 33 डिग्री सेल्सियस और सर्दियों का
तापमान 20 डिग्री सेल्सियस से 32 डिग्री सेल्सियस के बीच रहता है।
जून से सितंबर तक दक्षिण-पश्चिम मानसून द्वीपों में भरपूर वर्षा लाता है।
सापेक्ष आर्द्रता 70-75% है। वार्षिक वर्षा दक्षिण से उत्तर की ओर
घटती जाती है। साल में औसतन 80-90 दिन बारिश वाले होते हैं।
हवाएँ अक्टू बर से मार्च तक हल्की से मध्यम होती हैं।

 Wildlife Sanctuary and National Parks
It is located in Lakshadweep. Pitti bird sanctuary is also known
as Pakshipitti, this name is derived from the Tamil word Pitti
means bird. It is an important nesting place for pelagic birds
like the sooty tern, the greater crested tern, and the brown
noddy. It is also a prominent breeding place for sea turtles.
There are no national parks in Lakshadweep and only one bird
sanctuary.
 It’s Conservation Efforts
It is an uninhabited coral islet which has been declared a Bird Sanctuary under the
Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. It is surrounded by the Kavaratti Island in the north,
Agatti Island in the east and Amini Island in the south west. The length and breadth
of the island is 300 x 200 metres in size where there is lack of adequate anchorage
points, low and arid land with no vegetation.

Pakshipitti is considered to be an important nesting place for the birds such as Sooty
Tern, Greater Crested Tern and the Brown Noddy. It is also a prominent breeding
place for the sea turtles. This island belongs to the Kavaratti Tehsil or District. It has
been uninhabited as the presence of humans may affect the breeding of the birds
and their activities can disturb the entire surroundings for the birds.

The underwater view at Lakshadweep is kaleidoscopic and
breathtaking. The lagoon offers excellent potential for water sports
like swimming, wind-surfing, diving, snorkeling and kayaking.
Lakshadweep is most famous for kayaking and canoeing. Both these
water sports activities include paddling.

Folk ballads that depict stories of common man is the soul of the
music of Lakshadweep. The themes vary, from incidents relating to the
arrival of the Arab saint Hazrat Ubaidullah to the islands to its ransack
by the Portuguese and the fishing expeditions of the common
fisherfolk. The most famous musical instrument in Lakshadweep is the
'Sarangi'. The Sarangi is a stringed instrument made from a single
piece of wood, with four strings and a bow.
