WHAT IS STAR?
STAR is a huge glowing
ball of hot gases, mainly
hydrogen and helium.
WHERE DO STARS
COME FROM?
Stars form from
an accumulation of
gas and dust.
OBJECTIVES:
Explain the factors that may affect
the brightness of a star.
Investigate why do stars differ in
brightness.
Relate color with temperature of a
star.
When we look at the night sky, we see
thousands of stars. In reality, there are
approximately 400 billion stars in our
galaxy, and there are about 170 billion
galaxies. A person can see only about
3,000 stars on the average.
What are the characteristics of
stars? Are the stars the same in
size? Are the stars same in color?
Are the stars equally bright?

WHAT STAR IS CLOSEST
TO EARTH?

Sun
Figure 2 shows the size of the
Sun, the closest star to Earth, as
compared to some other stars
that we see at night.
Sun is only about 149.6 million
kilometers away, and it takes only
8 minutes and 20 seconds for
sunlight to reach our world. Its
diameter is about 1.4 million
kilometers, 100 times of the earth. 
WHAT IS THE COLOR OF
THE COOLEST STAR?
HOTTEST STAR?
The color of the coolest is
red and the hottest is blue.
The color of the star indicates its surface
temperature. Stars emit colors of many
different wavelengths, but the wavelength
of light where a star's emission is
concentrated is related to the star's
temperature - the hotter the star, the more
BLUE it is; the cooler the star, the more
RED it is.

Proxima Centauri has the lowest
temperature and the star that has
highest temperature is the Alnilam.
The lower the
magnitude the brighter
the star is.

The sun is the brightest
star seen on earth.
The brightness of a star as seen
from the Earth depends on two
factors-distance and the actual
brightness (or absolute brightness)
of the star.
Apparent brightness is the
star’s brightness as seen from
Earth . It depends on how far
away a star is from the Earth.
 
Absolute brightness is
measured using the distance
between the star and Earth.

Sirius is closer to us than Rigel and
Sirius is brighter than Rigel, in terms
of apparent magnitude. And in
absolute magnitude Rigel is brighter
than Sirius.
