British vs American English
• The first wave of English speaking settlers arrived in America in the
17th century, followed by further waves in the 18th and 19th centuries.
• The settlers spoke with many different regional accents and dialects,
which blended and merged together. Furthermore, the settlers came
into contact with the Native American people and later Spanish
speakers from Mexico, along with other colonising nations such as
Germany, France and Holland.
• Many words which we see as ‘American’ are words that were
borrowed from these languages, such as ‘racoon’ (Native
American),‘cookie’ (Dutch), kindergarten (German) and ranch
(Spanish)
• Other words actually come from Middle English or Early Modern
English but have fallen out of use in British English. Examples of these
include fall, faucet, diaper and candy.

British vs American English
• Along with differences in vocabulary, there are differences in
spelling (orthography). Many of these date back to the first
American English dictionary, which was published in 1828 by
Noah Webster. At the time, a range of spellings were in use in
both countries, and Webster simply chose differently from the
compilers of dictionaries in Britain.
• American English tends to use adjectives as adverbs eg. ‘He ran
quick’ rather than ‘He ran quickly’. This is a feature which is
being adopted increasingly frequently in British English.
