with due regards to disease prevalence and public
health relevance, evidence of efficacy and safety and

TRADITIONAL MEDICINE

• Traditional medicine (also known as alternative, complementary, indigenous or folk


medicine) comprises knowledge systems that developed over generations within
various societies before the era of modern medicine

• The WHO defines traditional medicine as “ the sum of total of knowledge, skills, and
practices based on the theories, beliefs and experiences indigenous to different culture,
whether explicable or not, used in the maintenance of health as well as in the
prevention, diagnosis, improvement or treatment of physical and mental illness

Traditional medicines may be classified into:


 Medication
-medical plants, mineral materials and animal materials
 Non- medication
-Acupuncture, Acupressure, Chiropractic, Osteopathy, Manual therapies,
Physical, Mental and Spiritual therapies

• A treatment derived from ancient Chinese
medicine in which fine needles are inserted at
certain sites in the body for therapeutic or
preventative purposes

• Is an alternative medicine technique often
used in conjunction with acupuncture or
reflexology. It is based on the concept of the
life energy which flows through meridians in
the body

• Is a form of alternative medicine concerned
with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention
of mechanical disorders of the

emphasizes physical manipulation of the
body’s muscle tissue and bones
• Aims to restore the normal function and

plant parts, such as leaves, roots and flowers.
