THEATER
OVERVIEW
Performance art is a performance presented
to an audience within a fine art context,
traditionally interdisciplinary. Performance
may be either scripted or unscripted,
random or carefully orchestrated.;
spontaneous or otherwise carefully
planned with or without audience. The
performance can be lived or via media; the
performer can be present or absent

It can be any situation that involve four
basic elements: time, space, the
performer’s body, or presence in a
medium , and relationship between
performer and audience. Performance
art can happen anywhere, in any type of
venue or setting and for any length of
time. The action of an individual or a
group at particular place and in a
particular time constitute the work

 At the end of the lesson the learner

enumerating the elements of theater,

What is a Theater?
Theater is the one major form that bring
together all the other art form- from painting
and sculpture, to installation art , to music, to
dance, to literature, even to computer arts-
in single production. the medium of theater
is the story told in spoken dialogue and acted
out on a stage. Considered as a combine art,
it also employs scenery, costumes, furniture
and lighting, and at instance , music.

Element of Theater
1. Performers
The first element essential to theater is
performance because acting is the heart of
the theater. Acting is very demanding
profession- in addition to innate talent, the
actor must have a poise and authority to
appear on stage before an audience,

and ability to portray a character
convincingly. Acting also requires
considerable dedication, craft and skill.
Performer must learn to use both voice
and body with necessary flexibility and
control. They must also be able to create
acceptance of universal truth and trait
of the character thay portray.

Types of Acting
a. Subjective school- the actor is able to
move the audience only if he himself
is move. In other word, there must be
self involvement in the role he is
portraying.
b. Objective school- the actor must
approach his role with a cool mind,
and must not be “carried away” by his
role

The actor
As chief medium of the director in the
presentation of a play, the essential
qualities required of a good actor are:
a. Imagination-imaginative or ever
creative
b. Fluent emotional nature- able to shift
from one emotion to another without
much difficulty

c. mobility of inner constitution-
knowing what is sand reality, he is able
to shift from his personality to another
without any psychological confusion on
his part.

2. Audience
The essence of a theater is the
interaction between the performer
and the audience. Without the desired
interaction between the actors and
the spectators, the presentation would
a failure .

3. Director
the director is the pivotal element of
theater. He/she rehearse the actors and
coordinate their performance to make
certain that they interpret the text/sript
not only appropriate but at best,
convincingly.

Classification of Director
a. Traditional director- adheres as close
as possible to the playwright's original
intension. He recreate the experience
created by the playwright.

 b. Virtuoso- uses script only as a mean
to project his own ideas and intension,
not that of the playwright’s. He
developed the author’s ideas, but in the
process inject his own, according to
what he perceive is more appropriate
and exciting.

Choreography
The art of practice of designing
sequences of movement of physical
bodies (or their depiction) in which
motion, form, or both are specified. It
may also refers to the design itself. A
choreographer is one who create s
choreography, a process known as
choreographing.

Stage management
Stage management is the practice of
organizing and coordinating a theatrical
production. It encompasses a variety of
activities, including organizing the production
and coordinating communication between
various personnel. Stage manager is the one
who has the over all responsibility for stage
management and the smooth execution of
the production

Theater Lighting Designer
The theater lighting designer works with
the director, choreographer, set designer,
costume designer, and sound designer to
create the lighting , atmosphere, and
time of the day for the production in
response to the text, while keeping in
mind issues of visibility, safety, and cost.
It also work closely with stage manager.

Scenic Design (also known as scenography,
stage design, set design or production
design)
Scenic design is a creation of theatrical , as
well as film or television scenery. Scenic
designer design set and scenery that aim to
fully immerse the viewer in the production

The scenic designer work with the director, and other
designer to established the over all visual concept for the
production and design the stage environment. The work
of scenic designer are to developed design drawing of
basic ground plan showing all stationary scenic element,
composite ground plan showing all moving scenic
elements, indicating both their stage and storage position,
front elevation of every scenic elements, and additional
elevationor section of unit as required.
