Lesson 1 | Part 1

What is teacher Feedback is information given to the learner

about their performance, against the learning
feedback? goals of a lesson or activity, with the aim of
further improving their learning.
Teacher feedback is a
powerful pedagogical tool
for promoting interaction in
educational guidance
between teachers and
students (Hattie &
Timperley, 2007; Santana, Next
2013).

Lesson 1 | Part 1

Formative Feedback...
Formative feedback is when learners are given feedback and then allowed
additional opportunities to practise or resubmit their work.
EXAMPLE

for every module you take, you will be required to complete one or more assessments, whether this is
a presentation, report, essay or exam. If you want to make sure you are on the right track when
working on your assignment, you can send a draft to your lecturer for formative feedback.

Lesson 1 | Part 1

Summative feedback...
Summative feedback is given at the end of the learning process to provide
students with an overall assessment of their learning.
EXAMPLE
However, once you have submitted your assignment, the feedback provided will be summative.
Your final submission is assessed by your lecturer according to the assessment criteria and module learning
outcomes, aiming to award you the deserved final grade. Along with your grade, your lecturer will provide you
with comments. This summative feedback measures the skills you have gained over the entire module and
determines whether or not you have met the module learning outcomes (Stanford University, n.d.). Think of this
as your lecturer's justification for how you got your final grade.

Lesson 1 | Part 2

Influence of Teacher Feedback...

Teacher feedback has been regarded as one of the most
powerful influences on student learning and
achievement (Sadler, 1998). When teachers seek or at
least are open to what learners know, what they
understand, where they make errors, when they have
misconceptions when they are not engaged- then
teaching and learning can be synchronised and
powerful. Feedback to teachers makes learning visible

Lesson 1 | Part 3

Purpose of Feedback
Effective feedback is designed to determine a learner's level of understanding
and skill development to plan the next steps towards achieving the learning
intentions or goals.
Giving and Receiving Feedback
Feedback provides the practitioner and learner with evidence about current
knowledge and skill development. Understanding the learner's progress and
level of achievement enables the practitioner to make decisions about the next
steps to plan in the learning program. It enables the learner to reflect on their
learning strategies to confirm them or make changes to improve their
learning.

Lesson 1 | Part 3

Why is teacher feedback important?

Teacher feedback is a fundamental aspect of learning and
assessment. Providing your pupils with ongoing feedback has
proven to enhance learning and ensure progression. Teacher
feedback involves providing information on whether your student
has understood their learning and the next steps. Effective teacher
feedback examples assist your child to reflect on their learning,
including their learning method, so they know whether to adjust
their method for further progress.

Lesson 1 | Part 3

What are the benefits of teachers feedback to students work?

Feedback helps all individual students to understand the subject they are
studying and gives them clear guidance on how to improve their learning
procedure. Feedback can help students improve confidence, self-awareness
and enthusiasm for learning what they are being taught.
