Relating
Multiplication
& Division
Lesson Outcomes

01 I can understand multiplication and division by

thinking about groups of objects.

02
I can use what I know about multiplication and
division to solve word problems.

03 I can find the missing number in a multiplication

or division equation
Terms in
Multiplication
The numbers which are multiplied are called the
factors.
5 x 4 = 20
The number that results from multiplying the two Factors Product
factors is called the product.
Terms in
Division
20 4 = 5 The number that is divided is called the
dividend.

Dividend Divisor Quotient The number that divides the number is called
the divisor.

The answer we get through the process of

division is called the quotient.
Relating Multiplication & Division

Division is the inverse, or "opposite" of multiplication.

This means, if in multiplication we find the product of the two factors, in

division, we find the missing factor if the other factor and the product are
known.
Multiply number of number in

with groups all

Equal 3 x 5 = 15

Fact Families
A set of four related multiplication and division facts that
use the same three numbers.
For example: The fact family for 3, 2, and 6 is a set of two multiplcation and two division facts.

2x3=6 3x2=6 6 2=3 6 3=2

Let's Practice!
Put your multiplication and division skills to
the test!
Using Multiplication
Use the multiplication equation to help answer the division equation.

If If
4 x 6 = 24 5 x 7 = 35
Then Then
24 4 = ? 35 7 = ?
Answers: Using Multiplication
Use the multiplication equation to help answer the division equation.

If If
4 x 6 = 24 5 x 7 = 35
Then Then
24 4 = 6 35 7 = 5
Unknown Factors
Use the multiplication equation to help answer the division equation.

9 x ? = 36 36 9= ?
7 x ? = 63 63 7= ?
9 x ? = 18 18 9= ?
Answers: Unknown Factors
Use the multiplication equation to help answer the division equation.

9 x 4 = 36 36 9= 4
7 x 9 = 63 63 7= 9
9 x 2 = 18 18 9= 2
Fact Familes
Fill in four equations for each fact family.

3, 5, 15 7, 6, 42
x = x =
x = x =

= =
Answers: Fact Families
Fill in four equations for each fact family.

3, 5, 15 7, 6, 42
5 x 3 = 15 7 x 6 = 42
3 x 5 = 15 6 x 7 = 42
15 3 = 5 42 7 = 6
15 5 = 3 42 6 = 7
