Wind Energy
Introduction
 A wind turbine is a device that
converts K.E from the wind into
electrical power.

 Wind power is good renewable clean

and free source of power energy
production.
How power is generated
 Wind turbines cnvert K.E of the wind
into mechanical energy first and then
into electricity.
 The energy in the wind turns propeler
like blades arround a rotor shaft.
 The rotor is connected to the main
shaft which spins a generator to create
electricity.
Types
 Horizental axis
Vertical axis

Importance of wind speed
 No other factor is important to the
amount of power available in the wind
than the speed of wind.
 Power is the cubic funtion of wind
speed.
 Doubling wind speed means 8 times
more power.
Calculation of wind power
 Power in the Wind = ½ρAV3
Effect of air density, 
– Effect of swept area, A
– Effect of wind speed, V

Swept Area: A = πR2

Area of the circle swept by the
rotor (m2).
Wind is currently the world’s fastest growing energy source
Advantages
 The wind is free and with modern
method it can be captured easily.
 It’s a clean fuel source.
 Wind energy does not polute the air like
power plants.
 Wind energy is a domestic source of
energy.
Disadvantages
 No electricity is produced if there is no
wind.
 Wind turbines kills birds
 The turbines are noisy
 The energy that is produced cannot be
stored in large scale.
