Natural Disaster
• A Natural disaster is a major adverse event resulting
from natural processes of the Earth.
• Events that occur in unpopulated areas are not
considered disasters.
7
Examples
• Thunderstorm
• Earthquake
• Flood
• Volcano Eruption
• Hurricane
• Landslide
• Drought
• Tornado
• Tsunami
8
Earthquake
A sudden movement of the earth's crust caused by
the release of stress collected along faults or by
volcanic activity
9
Measurement of earthquake
• Earthquakes are measured using measurements
from seismometer.
10
Pollution by earthquake
• Air pollution
• Water pollution
• Ground pollution
• Climate change
11
Impacts on Environment
• collapsing buildings
• property damage
• mud slides
• fires
• floods
• tsunamis
12
Volcano Eruption
A vent in the earth's crust through which lava,
steam, ashes, etc., are expelled, either continuously
or at irregular intervals.
13
Impacts on Environment
• Houses, buildings, and other structures
destroyed
• Fires
• Toxic gases released into the atmosphere
• Carbon dioxide emitted from volcanoes adds to
the natural greenhouse effect.
• Loss of habitat
15
Flood
A temporary rise of the water level, as in a river or
lake or along a seacoast, resulting in its spilling over
and out of its natural or artificial confines onto land
that is normally dry.
16
Effects of Floods
Economic
• During floods (especially flash floods), roads,
bridges, farms, houses and automobiles are
destroyed. People become homeless. All these come
at a heavy cost to people and the government.
Environment
• The environment also suffers when floods happen.
Chemicals and other hazardous substances end up
in the water and eventually contaminate the water
bodies that floods end up in
17
Impacts on Environment
• Disease
• Loss of habitat
• Houses, buildings, and other structures
destroyed
• Household wastes get into the water system
• Power outages
18
Hurricanes
• A hurricane is a huge storm! It can be up to 600
miles across and have strong winds spiraling
inward and upward at speeds of 75 to 200 mph.
• Hurricanes gather heat and energy through
contact with warm ocean waters
19

Types of Hurricanes
hurricane" (the North Atlantic Ocean, the Northeast
Pacific Ocean east of the dateline, or the South Pacific
Ocean east of 160E)
Pollution by Hurricanes
Impact on Environment
• Erosion
• Houses, buildings, and other structures
destroyed
• Heavy flooding of inland areas
• Tornadoes
• Loss of power
• Contaminated water supply
23
Drought
• A period of below-average precipitation in a
given region.
• A drought can last for months or years, or may
be declared after as few as 15 days.
• The 1930s Dust Bowl drought and the 1950s
drought.
24
Tsunami
• An unusually large sea wave produced by a
seaquake or undersea volcanic eruption.
• Tsunami are sometimes referred to as tidal
waves
26
Pollution by Tsunami
• Land pollution (Debris come out from water)
• Water Pollution (By adding dangerous chemicals
in it)
• Salination of water bodies such as rivers, wells,
inland lakes, and groundwater aquifers can
occur in most cases.
27
Impacts on Environment
• houses, buildings, and other structures
destroyed
• loss of power
• erosion
• fresh water contaminated
28
Prevention
• We can’t control the natural disaster But we can
prevent it.
• By making early warning system
• By having first aid box.
• By making underground shelters.
