EXOTHERMIC PROCESS

www.speedwellindia .com
EXOTHERMIC WELDING– SPEEDWELL WELD CREDENTIALS
• Exothermic reaction that releases energy from the system
usually in the form of heat, (eg: a spark, flame or explosion
)
• In a adiabatic system (eg: a system that does not give off
heat to the surroundings ) an exothermic reaction results
in an increase in temperature.

• Exothermic welding is a welding process for joining two

electrical conductors.
• It employs superheated copper alloy to permanently join
the conductors. The process employs an exothermic
reaction of a copper thermite composition to heat the
copper and requires no external source of heat and
current. The chemical reaction that produces the heat is
a aluminothermic reaction between alumunium powder
and a metal oxide.

EXOTHERMIC WELDING– SPEEDWELL WELD CREDENTIALS
• The exothermic process is a simple, efficient method
of welding copper to copper or copper to steel.

• This process used a high temperature reaction of

powdered copper oxide and aluminum.

• Reaction takes place in a graphite mold.

• This system is very field friendly since it is light and

portable and requires no outside power.

• Will not loosen or corrode at weld.

• Provides a solid copper irreversible Bond

EXOTHERMIC WELDING– WELD SEQUENCE
• Open Mold using handle clamp and insert the
conductors as desired.

• Insert steel disc into mold cavity.

• Pour powdered metal into the mold cavity

close the Lid.

• Tap powder container to add the starting

powder to ignition pocket.

• Use flint device to ignite like lighter.

• Brush and remove mold.

REQUIREMENTS OF ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS

IDEAL CONNECTION SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING

QUALITIES
• Maintain contact integrity and electrical continuity.

• When conducting electrical current , connector temperature should

remain lower than that of the conductor.

• Able to withstand overload conditions without melting, burning or

failing.

• Long service life.
